JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Licensed Practical Nurse/Aide - LPN/Aide
LOCATION: Mingo County Schools Itinerant
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a Practical Nursing Program endorsed and approved by the State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses. Individual must have and maintain a valid WV Practical Nursing License issued by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses. Must have and maintain a valid Basic Cardiac Life Support and First Aid Certification. LPN experience in a hospital setting and/or experience with medically fragile or special needs individuals preferred.

EMPLOYMENT TERM: 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a in accordance with County Schools Salary Scale. Commensurate with Service and Education Level.
PAY GRADE : F
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the principal and/or assistant principal and the Lead School Nurse in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and County Schools Policy.
JOB SUMMARY: The LPN works under the supervision of the Certified School Nurse, RN to assist in providing health care services to students within the LPN Scope of Practice. The LPN/Aide role also serves in a support capacity to the teacher in a classroom.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to administer prescribed medications, including insulin, in accordance with state and county medication policy.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform specialized procedures in accordance with the WVDE Basic and Specialized Healthcare Procedure Manual for WV Public Schools. Procedures prescribed by the health care provider may include, but are not limited to naso-gastric or gastric tube feedings, nasal pharyngeal or tracheal suctioning, tracheostomy care, urinary catheterization, and nebulizer treatments.
- Provides and documents emergency care or first aid in cases of injury or sudden illness and reports care provided to the Certified School Nurse, RN.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN to implement individual health care plans, nursing care and treatments for assigned students.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN on immunization review and data entry.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN on mandated health screening programs.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN to recommend exclusion and monitor readmission to schools for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN and cooperates with community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social service needs of students.
- Collaborates with Certified School Nurse, RN to identify health and safety hazards in the school environment.
- Documents health related activities and treatments on daily logs, nurses’ notes and electronic medical record as required.
- Assists Certified School Nurse, RN to maintain health records.
- Maintains confidentiality of student’s health/medical and educational records.
- Ability to learn new skills; flexibility and willingness to perform and complete a variety of tasks.
- Provides personal care, assistance and supervision as needed to students including dressing and undressing; toileting, including diaper change; grooming; feeding; positioning; transfers i.e. may include lifting from wheelchair to changing table and/or floor; hygiene; use of adaptive equipment as per physician order such as, but not limited to, lifts, standers, wheelchairs and walkers, and assistive technology to aide in the classroom.
- Capability to ride the school bus to and from school with student(s) and/or attend in state or out of state field trips.
- Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and staff members.
- LPN/Aide duties will include the county Aide job description. Work location based upon assigned student’s school location.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Assistant Principal; Lead School Nurse; County Supervisor/Director.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
