About the Department

Performs health and environmental inspections and investigations, research, and analysis; does related work as necessary.

Compensation for this position is competitive and based on certification level. A Sanitarian-in-Training starts at $22.65 per hour, while a licensed Sanitarian earns between $24.22 and $27.35 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

This is responsible, skilled, technical work involving inspections, investigations, and enforcement of environmental health laws and regulations along with implementing special programs within the Environmental Health Division. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Environmental Health Division Manager. The nature of the work performed requires an employee in this class establish and maintain close, cooperative working relationships with other health department and city- county employees and supervisors, public officials, business owners and operators, building trade professionals, compliance agencies, and the general public.

Position Duties

  • Performs inspections, investigations, and takes required follow-up actions to enforce food service rules and regulations, plan reviews, including Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) with food purveyor owners and/or operators.
  • Performs inspections, investigations, and plan reviews for trailer courts and campgrounds, public accommodations, daycares, work camps, public swimming pools and spas, body art establishments, and schools to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
  • Investigates communicable disease outbreaks and issues appropriate public information.
  • Issues notices and orders, and conducts consultations.
  • Enforces environmental rules and regulations concerning dangerous buildings, abandoned buildings, and other complaints of public health importance,
  • Enforces federal, state, and local ambient air quality rules and regulations; monitors air quality equipment; conducts sampling; reviews data, and prepares necessary reports.
  • Performs research, inspections, and investigations for water quality issues including enforcement of rules and regulations; i.e. on-site wastewater systems, swimming pools and spas, and non-community water supply systems.
  • Performs subdivision reviews for compliance with state subdivision rules and regulations.
  • Performs research, compiles data, and prepares reports and presentations for the health department, public officials, and the general public on environmental health issues.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of all food service and food establishment rules and regulations including standards for construction and operation of food service facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of all other public healthsafetyand nuisance lawsrules and regulationsas issued by federalstateand local agencies.
  • Thorough knowledge of federalstate, and local environmental lawsrules, and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of biologychemistryand bacteriology.
  • Skill in public speaking.
  • Ability to communicate well with property owners, business ownersarchitectscontractorssub contractorspublic officialsand the general public to secure compliance with appropriate public health and safety codeslawsordinancesand rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to interpret federalstateand local legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, conclusionsand recommendations.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard word processing, database and spreadsheet applications appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Ability to communicate well with health department employees and supervisorspublic officialsbusiness ownerscontractorsand the general public both orally and in writingusing both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to use logical thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perf01m a wide variety of difficult technical tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information.
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of tasks assigned.

Acceptable Experience and Training:
  • Graduation from a college or universitof recognized standing with a bachelor's degree in environmental health or a closelrelated fieldand
  • A minimum of 45 quarter hoursor 30 semester hours in the physical and biological sciences with specific courses in biologychemistryand microbiology.


Required Special Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid license as a Registered Sanitarian issued by the State of Montana, or abilitto obtain within 1 year.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Montana.

From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.
