About the Department

The purpose of this position is to lead and implement recreational activities, events, and programs within community centers, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for participants of all ages.

This works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Provides responsive, solution-oriented customer service to visitors, resolving inquiries and ensuring a positive experience.
• Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning policies, procedures, and use of equipment and facilities.
• Assists with marketing and outreach efforts, including distributing promotional materials and supporting community engagement.
• Plans and organizes recreational activities, classes, and special events for participants of all ages and abilities.
• Leads recreational programming independently, ensuring safety and high-quality participant experience.
• Assists in the development and implementation of program schedules, activity plans, and event logistics.
• Prepares activity areas, sets up equipment and supplies, and ensures proper cleanup and storage after use.
• Collaborates with other staff to ensure smooth program delivery.
• Assists with facility operations, including opening/closing procedures and general upkeep.
• Reports maintenance needs, assists with room setups, and ensures facility cleanliness.
• Serves as the primary point of contact for recreation software
• Maintains accurate records of attendance, incidents, and program evaluations as required.
• Prepares reports, maintains records, and completes special projects related to program performance, participation, and facility usage.
• Engages participants to foster involvement, ensure safety, and promote an inclusive environment.
• Monitors program areas for compliance with safety procedures and facility policies.

• Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Education, Sports Administration, Business, Public Affairs, Social Services, or related discipline;

• OR four (4) years of recreation, physical fitness, education, social services, or related experience
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Must be available to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends. Community centers are typically open Monday through Saturday until 8:00pm.
• Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
• Employees are required to wear the designated department-issued uniform at all times while on duty


SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
• CPR/AED/First Aid certified or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time including exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.
• Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements


UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
• Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
