Job SummaryProvides patient care in a mobile environment to high risk patients and their families being transported to/from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin-Fox Valley. Acts as a resource hospital wide for patient care standards and pre-code recognition. As a recognized resource, the job assists in establishing and maintaining a high quality standard of care for the neonatal and pediatric transport population under the age of two months.Essential Functions- Clinical * Understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal and infant patient in regards to their growth and development process. * May perform waived testing according to established hospital and regulatory policies and procedures. * Performs non-waived moderately complex testing in accordance with established laboratory, hospital and regulatory policies and procedures. * Meets the educational requirements per CLIA regulations for moderately complex testing personnel. - Transport: * Functions as a team leader when a physician or NNP is not present on the transport. * Assesses patient and provides interventions according to PALS and NRP protocols in an emergent situation, or after consulting with medical control physician and/or referring and attending physician. * After consultation with Medical Control, exercises independent judgment in situations when sudden clinical changes occur. Understands and implements necessary interventions and their expected outcomes. * Effectively communicates with parents and families throughout the transport process. * Provides a safe environment while maximizing clinical expertise during interfacility transports. * Documents care during transport including all demographics, vital signs assessments, procedures, medications administered, pertinent history, physical exam, plan and orders for care along with response to any interventions provided. * Collaborates with other team members in the planning and providing optimal patient care during the transport process including patient placement. * Contributes to the identification of a potential diagnosis, interventions, and expected outcomes specific to the defined patient population. * Possesses analytical and critical thinking skills and provides data to assist physician in interpreting patient labs, CXR, scans, and overall patient assessment. - Departmental: * Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of CHW-FV Transport departmental operations, policies, procedures, products, programs relating to the transport environment and patient population. * Acts as a team member by identifying personal, departmental and hospital goals. Collaborates in a positive manner towards the success of the goals by offering input, ideas and solutions. * Supports quality improvement initiatives by collecting and analyzing data. * Maintains department responsibilities in Transport by attending educational offerings, staff meetings, departmental and hospital interdisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and recurrence training. - Education: * Assists in the development and validation of patient care standards for the transport patient population. * Assists with developing educational material for CHW-FV staff, referring staff, parents, patients, and pre-hospital personnel. * Assists in the identification of patient care provider educational needs. (CHW-FV staff and referring facilities staff.) * Obtains and maintains required certifications (BLS, NRP, PALS) and licensure. * Provides for and maintains professional growth of self and others.Education:- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required - An Associate or diploma prepared nurse will be considered, with the expectation they will be enrolled in a BSN completion program with the understanding that degree completion would occur within three years required Experience:- 2+ years current neonatal/pediatric clinical experience and have approval from their immediate supervisor and respiratory/transport supervisor required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Acquires and maintains all The Joint Commission requirements - Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to resolve complex patient problems in a mobile environment, develop standards of care and procedures, and evaluate the quality of nursing care. - Demonstrates ability to work independently and utilize time management, prioritization and multi- tasking skills. - Demonstrates ability to assemble complex equipment and perform tasks which require fine motor skills. - Demonstrates ability to cope with physically and mentally stressful situations. - Maintains and demonstrates the ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours to meet patient care needs. - Must be able to walk, stand for long periods, over 80% of the assigned work period. - Must be able to squat occasionally and sit frequently. - In the Rotor Wing/Ambulance, must be able to lift/carry 65 pounds, push/pull up to 40 pounds occasionally, reach overhead moderately, climb moderately, squat/bend/kneel occasionally, sit/stand moderately, walk/move about frequently, tolerate tight quarters, small spaces and sit in a confined space. Licenses and Certifications: - License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin required and - BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council Required Upon Hire required and - NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Provider - American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association within 90 Days required or - NRPI-Neonatal Resuscitate Provider Instructor - American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association required - PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council within 180 Days required Patient Care Responsibility- Provides care appropriate to patient population and as described in applicable policies and procedures.
