Special Olympics Assistant Coach Duties:
Special Olympics Assistant Coach will report to the Special Olympics Head Coach/SOAD of the District to organize, prepare, and provide technical support to the athletes of all Special Olympics sports offered by MVTHS including, but not limited to:
Athletics (track & field), Basketball Skills, Basketball Team, Unified Basketball Team, Unified Soccer, Unified Bass Fishing, Snowshoeing, Bowling, and Motor Activities Training Program (MATP). The Assistant Coach must be well educated/experienced in coaching and demonstrate qualities that include sportsmanship, leadership, dedication to quality training, sport rules comprehension, communication skills, and have the ability to function well as a part of a team. Some practices and events are held during the school day and some are after school or on weekends. Some events, especially at the state level, will include overnight stays. Accommodations/meals are paid for through the Activity Account. Coaching staff serves a dual role of both coach and chaperone. Assist with issuing press releases and maintaining social media to positively promote the student-athletes, the MVTHS Special Olympics program, and the school as a whole with the community. Assistant Coaches will also be asked to promote and participate in Unified Champion Schools activities. MVTHS Special Olympics is a financially self-sufficient program, so the entire coaching staff assists with fundraising.
Qualifications:
· Expected to become certified by Special Olympics Illinois for each sport offered (see list above). Trainings are provided by Special Olympics Illinois locally and/or at the state level and will be at no cost to the coach;
· Must become a registered Class A Volunteer with Special Olympics Illinois by completing the Protective Behaviors and Concussion Awareness trainings, and passing a national background check;
· Understand and accept the fundamental goals and mission of MVTHS Special Olympics;
· Must serve as a positive role model and abide by the Coaches Code of Conduct;
· Must assist in enforcing the other Codes of Conducts for Athletes, Peer Partners, Volunteers, and Spectators;
· Must be willing to maintain ongoing contact with athletes and their family/guardians; and
· Must have knowledge of social media platforms to promote student-athletes and the program.
