About the Department
The City of Sioux City is looking for a talented, hard-working individual to join our Building Maintenance team. This position is responsible for a wide variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities which include demolishing structures, remodeling or new construction of buildings, carpentry work, maintains, installs and repairs plumbing of pipes and fixtures, operates and maintains swimming pools, and snow removal are some of the required tasks. This position will work 40 hours per week but may be required to work overtime as needed.
Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake with tanker endorsement within six months from the date of hire.
Certain positions may be required to obtain a Class 1 Hydronic Engineer’s License within 5 years from date of this requirement or Class 3 Hydronic Engineer's License within 3 years from date of this requirement.
Must be able to obtain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) License within (12) twelve months of hire.

Our employees are required to reside within thirty (30) miles of the City of Sioux City, city limits which extends to the adjoining states of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Position Duties
- Constructs, repairs and remodels buildings and structures including rough and finish carpentry.
- Tears down or demolishes structures in preparation for remodeling or new construction of buildings, garages, shelters, etc.
- Performs skilled building and facility finish work including dry wall, painting, and paneling.
- Relocates walls, windows, hallways, partitions, and doors in existing buildings.
- Builds tables, cabinets, shelves, desks, etc. from rough sketches and blueprints.
- Maintains, replaces, installs, and repairs plumbing pipes, fixtures, faucets, etc.
- Troubleshoots and repairs sprinkler systems.
- Operates and maintains low pressure steam and hot water heating systems.
- Performs routine landscaping work including some cement finishing.
- Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair electrical wiring and devices.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs pumps, motors, and related controls.
- Operates and maintains swimming pools, splash pads, fountains, repairs plumbing, applies chemicals.
- Performs routine welding work involved in construction and remodeling.
- Makes routine repairs of office equipment.
- Participates in snow removal operations.
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position as assigned by management.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Minimum Qualifications

Job Knowledge: Good working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in at least one of the skilled trades in building /mechanical maintenance, construction, and repair work some knowledge and skill in remaining trades; knowledge of the occupational hazards and accepted safety precautions applicable to the building trades knowledge of and ability to work from, sketches, schematics, and drawings.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide direction and assistance to other employees; ability to identify and understand the speech of another person; ability to speak clearly, distinctly, and effectively with fellow employees; ability to read schematics and in English, and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; ability to apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; ability to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements:
The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance; ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects; ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue; ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, arms, and/or legs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; extreme cold; explosives; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
