DEFINITION:

The Utilities Engineering Internship is a temporary position over the summer during college break. Full-time college students in an engineering curriculum and those expected to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in engineering are intended to fill this position. This position will assist in the review of civil engineering plans for proposed development projects, Capital Improvement Projects and a variety of permit applications to ensure compliance with the City of Brighton Standards and Specifications and Brighton Municipal Code. The position will also assist in construction observation of Utilities Department Capital Improvement Projects. This position must work well independently and with teams made up of employees from other City Departments, engineering consultants and contractors.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:

This position reports directly to the Utilities Engineering Manager. This position does not supervise other employees.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Assist in the review of civil engineering plans and reports, including water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage utilities, for proposed development projects within the City.
Reviews records, as-builts construction documents, utility maps, master plan reports and other documents to aid in the Utility Department development review.
Attend meetings in conjunction with another Utilities engineer to discuss developments with interested developers, landowners and their consultants to address concerns and answer questions related to City of Brighton Utilities.
Assist in the review of civil engineering plans and reports for Capital Improvement Projects for the water, wastewater and storm drainage utilities.
Assist in the review of permit applications for utility infrastructure construction to help protect against the City’s utility infrastructure being compromised or damaged.
Assist in the preparation of documents to be submitted to the City’s Procurement Division for advertisement of Capital Improvement Projects.
Assist in managing project records including contract documents, change orders, and engineering plans and reports.
Observes infrastructure construction to check conformance to approved civil engineering plans, design specifications and contract documents.
Attends staff meetings in conjunction with other Utilities engineers.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Utilities Engineering Division.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate must be at least 18 years of age.

Knowledge of:
Basic principles of engineering as applied to civil design.
Basic computer skills, including previous experience with word processing and spreadsheets.
Basic understanding of hydraulics.
Ability to:
Read, analyze, and understand standards and specification, and Municipal Code.
Effectively interact in a responsive manner with City Leadership, supervisors, consultants and the general public.
Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Apply accounting principles toward the review of invoices and pay applications.
Apply basic mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry to construction inspection work.
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Drive a City-owned truck, van, or car and safely operate on City business; and
Use computer, telephone, copier, sampling equipment, laboratory equipment and small hand tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


A high school diploma or GED, supplemented by course work in civil engineering or other engineering discipline from a college, university or technical school is required. Those projected to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or engineering technology are welcome to apply for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, kneel or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds alone or with assistance, as available. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
