Job Description:

Purpose of Your Position

The Medication Aide assists in administering medications to residents as prescribed by the attending physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse and in coordination with the Director of Nursing Services. All medication administration must follow established nursing standards, facility policies, and state and federal regulations to ensure safe and accurate delivery of care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

🩺 Administrative Functions

  • Follow facility policies and procedures governing the administration of medications.

  • Report any medication errors or irregularities promptly to the Nurse Supervisor or Director of Nursing.

  • Maintain accurate documentation for all medication-related activities.

💊 Medication Administration

  • Safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications according to physician orders.

  • Verify the identity of each resident before administering medication or treatment.

  • Observe and record resident reactions and notify nursing leadership of any adverse effects.

  • Measure, record, and report vital signs as directed.

  • Ensure all medications are properly labeled, stored, and handled according to facility policy.

  • Document refusals of medication and provide appropriate follow-up.

  • Assist in charting, documentation, and removal of discontinued medications.

  • Follow proper procedures for drug receipt, return, re-ordering, and destruction.

  • Report and document drug receipt errors and assist with correction.

  • Monitor and document resident self-administration of medications as directed.

  • Maintain familiarity with medical abbreviations, symbols, and terminology related to medication administration.

📋 Documentation & Reporting

  • Record medication administration accurately in the resident’s clinical record, including dosage, route, and time.

  • Complete and file medication error reports as required.

  • Maintain compliance with all facility and state charting standards.

🧼 Safety and Sanitation

  • Follow infection control procedures and ensure medication carts and storage areas remain clean and organized.

  • Dispose of infectious waste, expired medications, and biological materials per facility policy.

  • Report safety hazards, defective equipment, or environmental concerns immediately.

🕊️ Resident Rights

  • Protect resident confidentiality and privacy at all times.

  • Treat all residents with fairness, kindness, and respect.

  • Conduct private resident interviews when discussing care or medication needs.

  • Report complaints, grievances, or suspected abuse immediately to the Director of Nursing.

  • Respect each resident’s right to refuse medication or treatment.

⚙️ Working Conditions

  • Requires intermittent sitting, standing, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.

  • May experience frequent interruptions and emotionally charged interactions.

  • Works closely with residents, families, nursing staff, and external healthcare partners.

  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, or other environmental hazards.

  • Must be able to assist residents safely during emergencies or evacuations.

  • Participates in continuing education programs and in-service training as required.

    Qualifications:

    Education & Certification

    • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with a Medication Aide certification approved by the State of Nebraska.

    • Successful completion of a state-approved training program and required examination and/or competency review.

    • Documentation of certification must be provided upon application.

    • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English clearly and effectively.

    • Demonstrates sound judgment and the ability to make independent decisions when needed.

    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully with residents, families, and team members.

    • Willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional staff.

    • Ability to handle emotionally challenging or difficult resident situations with tact and empathy.

    • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.

    Physical & Sensory Requirements

    • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.

    • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken and written English.

    • Must be able to manage the mental and emotional demands of the position.

    • Must have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

    • Able to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds safely.

    • Must be able to see and hear (with or without prosthetics) to meet essential job requirements.

    • Able to assist residents during emergency evacuations and perform physical care tasks as needed.

    • Must be able to work effectively with residents who are elderly, ill, disabled, or emotionally upset.
