The Role

We’re seeking a passionate, proactive and adaptable Safe and Well Field Advisor to join our team, championing a progressive, human-centric approach to safety across Yarra Valley Water’s operational sites. In this field-based role, you’ll put into practice some of the more progressive approaches to workplace health and safety, such as conducting Work Insights, Learning Teams, and Gemba Walks (safety walks based on humble enquiry), together with some tried and tested traditional tools such as safety inspections, hazard rectifications, general risk assessments and critical control verifications. 

You’ll work closely with operational teams and our partners/contractors, providing practical safety advice, training and support to help both staff and partners/contractors work safely and with confidence. Rather than relying on traditional, ‘one size fits all’ safety norms, you’ll apply a people-based model - recognising that those closest to the work are key to identifying real risks and creating practical, lasting solutions.

Your key responsibilities

• Maintain and oversee the YVW Field Safety Activity schedule in all aspects of field safety monitoring activities across YVW sites.
• Facilitate site safety inspections and work insights to identify gaps between ‘Work as Imagined’ and ‘Work as Done,’ as well as ensuring the OHS practices and activities at YVW sites (and at times, delivery partner / contractor sites) are implemented and effective.
• Manage the implementation of safety hazard identification and risk management programs across sites and workplaces, including following up on hazard rectifications.
• Participate in Contractor Safety Walks / Inspections and coach YVW Project Managers in how to proactively and positively engage with Contractors on safety matters.
• Positively influence and advise field workers and Managers on health and safety matters, requirements under OHS legislation, and drive forward the agenda for positive health and safety change across YVW workplaces.
• Provide safety advice, training, consultation, and monitoring to ensure all relevant OH&S legislation, YVW policies and procedures are implemented and effective.
• Liaise with Delivery Partners and Contractors on safety matters and monitor the effectiveness of simultaneous operations on YVW sites from a safety and wellbeing perspective.
• Manage and develop assigned initiatives for the execution of the annual Safe and Well plan.
• Facilitate incident investigations under the ‘Investigations Differently’ model.
• Maintain a sound knowledge of current legislation, policies and guidelines.

What we’re looking for

• Minimum Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety - this is essential
• At least 3 years of experience in a dedicated safety role - preferably in construction, maintenance or utilities industry
• A proven track record in developing and contributing to innovative safety strategies, particularly those grounded in practical, real-world application
• Experience promoting and embedding a positive safety culture across diverse teams
• Strong ability to interpret and apply complex safety legislation
• A solid understanding of construction safety, facilities management and safety in design principles
• Excellent communication skills - able to connect with operational staff, contractors, and stakeholders
• Adaptability and creativity – able to work with what’s available, think on your feet, and offer practical solutions in dynamic environments
• Comfortable analysing safety data, identifying trends, and reporting insights that drive improvement
