Job Summary: Works in coordination with the oncology and hematology providers assisting to manage quality patient care. Performs general nursing cares to include specialized duties that include working with all ancillary and nursing departments to coordinate patient needs and cares. Must be a high functioning, critical thinking nurse that has strong communication skills and can implement provider and patient needs in a quick-paced environment.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of Greater Regional Health Infusion/Oncology Services.
- Works alongside providers to meet patient needs with appointments, follow-ups, and phone calls.
- Educate patients and families about medications, testing, side effects, and disease process.
- Rounds with provider for any inpatients as needed.
- Assist with tasks to achieve QI goals.
- Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with quality standards and is documented in clinical records to include assessments, vital signs, patient history, and review of medications.
- Acts as a liaison between patient, family, staff, and providers, able to intervene in conflicts with coworkers, patients, families, providers, and other customers.
- Triages phone calls from patients, families, providers, and other staff while following through accordingly.
- Maintains communication and promotes cooperation with other departments. Communication is open and respectful.
- Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients.
- Assessing situations, set priorities, and respond to patient care problems within a satisfactory time frame.
- Compassionate and able to cope with the terminally ill and the patient with a catastrophic illness and their family.
- Build patient charts/prep for medical oncology clinic and genetics clinic
- Follows up with outside referrals
- Room patients for providers
- Place physician Orders
- Receive, evaluate, document, and implement provider orders per GRH policies and procedures.
- Reports pertinent observations/assessments and reactions regarding patients to the providers.
- May perform infusions, injections, dressing changes, hook and unhook Cadd pumps, blood draws, blood product transfusions, INR, port maintenance, PICC line maintenance, patient education, and other procedures.
- Participates or assists in annual drills, i.e.: disaster, fire, and tornado.
- Assists with maintaining and improving patient satisfaction.
- May cross train to run Radiation Oncology Clinic
- May be required to travel to a satellite clinic with provider
Skills, Education and Experience:
- Current RN nursing license
- OCN preferred but not required
- May obtain INR certification
