Position Duties
Purpose of Position
Under frequent supervision, performs routine grounds and public greenway maintenance duties such as mowing, pruning, weedeating, watering flowers, planting different vegetation, and other related duties as required. This position is fulltime with benefits. Position reports to the ROW – Maintenance Division Manager or his designee.
Essential Job Functions
The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. - Right of Way Landscaping Technician I Functions
- Maintains awareness to ensure the safety of the public, public grounds and park facilities; notes possible safety hazards and immediately notifies management of any immediate danger or potential avenue of injury. Immediately reports any work related injury to management.
- Performs a variety of ground maintenance duties to include, but not limited to, collection and clearing of man-made trash, cellulosic and household garbage and other public debris and litter; pulling weeds, trimming/pruning shrubs, mowing and edging lawns/grounds, raking, watering plants and trees, and emptying trash receptacles.
- Assist in maintaining City right-of-ways, parks, and other grounds, performing such duties as mowing, removing weeds, edging, pruning trees and shrubbery, removing brush and fallen trees along sidewalks, curbs, etc.
- Performs all work in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments.
- Ensures safe equipment and operation of equipment and tools such as weed eater, hedge trimmer, lawn mower, lawn tractor, rakes, blowers, and other various hand tools.
- Interacts and communicates appropriately with a wide variety of individuals to include, but not limited to, the general public, supervisory and administrative staff, and other City employees and officials.
- Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Participates in the City’s urban forestry efforts to include, but be limited to, planting, maintenance, watering, pruning, or removal of trees and shrubbery.
- Other duties as required to include, but not be limited to, providing support to other departments when needed and may be temporarily assigned to other departments; provide support in the form of set up, take down, and other needed tasks at special events or festivals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a high school diploma or GED from an acceptable accredited high school or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. (As a general rule, high school diplomas from internet sources are usually not acceptable.)
- Must be physically able to successfully complete the requirements of the position.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and orderly manner.
- Be a team member and have the ability to work well with others.
- Possess and maintain a current valid South Carolina Drivers’ License
- Operate within all established routine working, personnel, ethical, and safety guidelines, rules, and regulations.
- Requires good judgement, good work ethic, and general knowledge of lawn and landscaping equipment operation and processes.
Knowledge of:
- Requires knowledge of the ability to safely use the materials, tools, and equipment needed for the maintenance, general groundskeeping, and other functions of the position.
- Requires knowledge of and proper safe use of all related field and office equipment, tools, and machinery.
- Requires knowledge of and consistent participation in safety policies and procedures all aspects of this position.
- Requires knowledge of the occupational hazards of the industry and compliance with all OSHA safety rules, standards, and regulations of the position.
- Requires ability to work in a variety of environmental/climatological conditions.
- Requires knowledge of the layout of the City’s service area streets and business locations.
- Requires the ability to gain new knowledge and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Requires knowledge and the ability to read and interpret written requests, work orders, technical matters, and electronic telecommunication equipment required to effectively perform the requirements of this position.
- Requires the knowledge and ability to prepare reports and records with accuracy and in a timely manner as required.
- Requires knowledge of and the ability to use routine terminology common in the industry.
- Requires the knowledge and ability to establish and maintain effective and cordial working relationships with co-workers and the general public;

Physical Demands of Position
- Must be physically able and possess the manual dexterity of all limbs to safely operate different types of lawn and landscaping maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, lawn mowers, lawn tractors, weed eaters, rake, and other related hand tools.
- Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move and manipulate objects of various sizes and weights of up to one hundred pounds.
- Physical demands require walking, standing, reaching, stooping, crouching, and bending in various positions for various periods of time.
- Must be able to work in a variety of environmental/climatological conditions to include, but not be limited to, extreme heat, cold, wind, humidity, rain, smoke, dust, pollen, and etc.
- Physical demands are in excess of sedentary.
- Employee is exposed to computer screens and other electronic communication and data storage equipment.
- This position requires the use of personal protective equipment to include, but not be limited to, eye protection, hand protection, hearing protection, steel-toed safety shoes, etc.
Working Conditions
Working conditions include usual year-round outside working conditions and conditions associated with providing customer service on location.
Supervision Exercised
This position does not require supervision of other employees.
Supervision Received
Reports to Right of Way Division Manager or assigned designee. Works closely with other city personnel in order to meet the expectations and requirements of the position.
