Position Overview:
This role is responsible for conducting the Dog Training Services, which are offered at Oak Heart’s Resort at South Saunders. The ideal candidate will have experience in training various breeds and behaviors of dogs and will have a love for animals and their people. As the Dog Trainer, you will be responsible for making a real difference from puppy obedience to behavioral challenges. This role requires excellent animal handling and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.

- Demonstrate professional and effective individual training programs and group class management, with kind and timely feedback to the pet-parents.
- A sound knowledge of various dog training techniques that fall in line with the Hospital’s values and vision by use of ethical, positive reward-based reinforcement techniques that observe minimally aversive and least intrusive tactics (force, fear, and/or pain-inducing equipment is not permitted).
- Effectively teach with a variety of instruction strategies (verbal, written, demonstration, hands-on, etc.).
- Ability to answer pet-parent questions and concerns regarding training and behavioral issues.
- Ability to work and communicate as a team with fellow employees and other departments, regarding class schedules, space, and cleanliness.
- Assist with cleaning, dog-care, and husbandry of dogs-in-training.
- Safely socialize dogs and support the Resort Team in daycare activities that include dogs-in-training or in-need-of-training.
- Join in staff-training and mentorship sessions.
- Self-motivation to promote training services to build their clientele by doing marketing events in the community and connecting with other veterinary hospitals.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Interact with animals to familiarize them to human voices and/or contact.
- Interview dog owners to understand challenges and goals.
- Obedience training, such as training dogs to respond to commands.
- Socializing dogs with other household pets and teaching them “play etiquette”.
- Handle dogs of various breeds and temperaments with care and compassion.
- Instruction to pet owners as to how to continue training at home.
- Creating custom training plans for each dog and/or each class.
Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Dog training experience and formal schooling and certification through the Certification Council of for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) OR proof of Dog Training Education from accredited school.
- Flexibility for morning and/or evening shifts/classes (Monday through Saturday AM).
- Conducting evening classes is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time – up to six (6) hours)
- Ability to lift, walk, bend, twist, reach, push and squat most of the workday.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 40#.
- Ability to handle and safely manage large dog breeds up to 150#.
- Ability to respond quickly to sounds with good reaction time and sudden/fast response.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Ability to have good awareness and respond safely to dangerous situations.
