This position is responsible for setting the security strategy and building key programs within the Acute Division that aligns with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. Create system-level policies, standards, and best practices for security operations. Assess emerging risks and recommend innovative solutions to strengthen security posture.
Working closely with Hospital leadership, the Director develops and implements large-scale security initiatives, ensures security technology systems meet organization needs (e.g., access control, CCTV), and monitors KPIs to identify improvement initiatives. Partner with key stakeholders to ensure coordinated security approaches, including leading Workplace Violence prevention program.
The Director of System Security (Acute) is highly strategic, requiring strong communication skills, collaboration, and influence to meet goals. This role demands a high level of professionalism, sound judgment under pressure, and the ability to respond swiftly to high-risk situations, including potential active threats.
Other Requirements
The Armed Director must maintain all required certifications and licensures to carry a firearm and demonstrate proficiency in crisis management, conflict de-escalation, and healthcare-specific threat mitigation. Strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to compassionate service in a patient-centered environment are essential for success. This position will involve travel across the Commonwealth as well as NC.

Director must pass the Psychological Evaluation and Assessment conducted by the Sentara selected Service Provider within 90 days of hire
Director must also obtain Virginia DCJS – Armed Officer Certificate within 90 days of hire
Director must obtain Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) - Certification - International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) within 90 days of hire
HANDLE WITH CARE Certification (HWC) - Certification - Workday Learning within 90 days of hire
