About the Department

Performs routine unskilled manual labor tasks in the collection of refuse, recycling, leaves, limbs, white goods and bulky items.

An employee in this class performs manual labor tasks related to the collection of refuse, recycling, leaves, limbs, white goods and bulky items.  Work involves heavy lifting and working at a constant pace.  Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, and gases.  Work is performed under the daily direction of an equipment operator and regular supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor.  Work is evaluated through daily observation for quality and completion according to instructions and established standards. 

Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Works on an assigned route on a crew picking up limbs and leaves, raking and loading grass clippings and pine straw; operates leaf vacuum cleaner.

  • Uses pitch forks, shovels and rakes to collect limbs and leaves.

  • Picks up and loads white goods and bulky items.

  • Works on an assigned route on a crew picking up refuse and/or recycling.

  • Acts as flag person and directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas.

  • Sweeps and cleans vehicle parking area.

  • Answers questions from citizens regarding department procedures.

  • Assists in other sanitation areas such as collecting refuse and recyclable materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • General knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.

  • Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace and under various weather conditions.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with coworkers and the general public.

Other Qualifications

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • One year of maintenance work or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
