The Philanthropic Advisor provides best-in-class service to donors and their advisors, foundations, corporations and nonprofits. This position manages relationships with a portfolio of supporting organizations, private foundations, families, individual donors, and their financial advisors to facilitate their grant-making and foster their engagement in philanthropy. In addition, this position will focus on supporting our charitable agency funds. The Philanthropic Advisor also provides sector knowledge and collaborates on educational programming to the nationwide donor community.
This full-time position is salaried, exempt and works from the Kansas City, MO office, requiring some travel around the metro area. There may be an ability to work remotely after a successful training period.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Management: Manages a portfolio of donors and philanthropic advisory services clients to encourage, inform, and support their charitable giving (and their family’s charitable giving) with a strategic lens. Serve as relationship manager or secondary staff contact for assigned donors, consulting with coworkers when appropriate. With careful attention to detail, keep internal and external stakeholders informed of decisions and activity.
Relationship Development: Develops and maintains strong relationships with assigned donors and their advisors, supporting their philanthropic goals through responsive service and thoughtful engagement. Actively grows a network of funders, nonprofit organizations, and community contacts to enhance donor understanding and participation. Collaborate with internal and external partners to help donors articulate and achieve meaningful outcomes.
Philanthropic Strategy: Supports donors in identifying and pursuing their philanthropic interests by applying current knowledge of the social impact and nonprofit sectors. Conducts research, participates in site visits, and engages with nonprofit organizations to inform donor decision-making.
Agency Fund Oversight: Provide strategic oversight of agency fund relationships to ensure responsive support, accurate data, and alignment with investment protocols. Serve as the primary contact for daily inquiries and maintain fund integrity across systems. Lead annual investment reviews to uphold transparency and fiduciary standards. Assess potential agency fund partnerships to align nonprofit goals with Foundation services.
Donor Education: Assist in the development and delivery of donor education experiences – including events, written content and presentations – that promote learning and engagement. Contributes to the organization's educational efforts through accessible and relevant materials.
Donor Engagement: Creates and shares content that encourages donor participation in charitable planning. Facilitates opportunities for donors to explore giving strategies and connect with community initiatives that align with their values.
Technology Integration: Inform the development and improvement of technological systems that interface with donors and support data management and internal team communications.

Requirements
Education & Experience: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least 5-7 years of related experience in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Expertise: Willingness to complete requirements for 21/64 Certified Advisor certification within a year of employment. Ability to read, analyze and interpret a variety of instructions and procedures; operate within current industry best practices.
Technical Aptitude: Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. High technical aptitude and ability to learn new software quickly and thoroughly.
Relationships: Ability to build professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and successfully communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to make effective speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to varying stakeholders.
Financial Acumen: Possess operational level of financial acumen and ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Operational Agility: Ability to operate in a highly collaborative environment, while able to work independently and be self-motivated. Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints; work well under pressure, including identifying and quickly resolving problems.
Transportation: Possesses a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and maintains a clean driving record. Demonstrates the ability to drive safely, follow GPS/map instructions accurately, and ensure access to reliable transportation for work-related travel and engagements.
Physical Requirements
Office & Computer Work: Ability to work regularly at a computer terminal in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
Noise & Communication: Able to work in an office with moderate noise levels. Ability to communicate and interpret detailed information effectively.
