The Director of Payroll will lead payroll operations, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring deep payroll expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to work in a thriving, fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of multi-state payroll
- Own and enforce payroll-related deadlines to prevent delays or disruptions
- Act as the key decision-maker during payroll emergencies, maintaining calm and clarity under pressure
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, IT, and other departments to ensure payroll accuracy and data integrity
- Oversee payroll compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including taxes, wage and hour rules, and reporting
- Serve as the subject matter expert on UKG and Unifocus, including configuration, reporting, and troubleshooting
- Develop and implement payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Manage vendor, auditor, and regulatory agency relationships
- Provide leadership, coaching, and support to the payroll team
- Lead payroll projects, including system upgrades, process improvements, and system integrations
- Prepare and present payroll metrics, analytics, and reports to senior leadership
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; CPA or CPP preferred
- 8–10 years of progressive payroll experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
- Strong working knowledge of UKG and Unifocus is required
- Understanding of payroll-related accounting principles, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
- Experience leading teams, managing projects, and driving process improvements
- Proven ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- High integrity and discretion with confidential information
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with payroll integrations with HRIS, timekeeping, and financial systems
- Knowledge of garnishments, benefit deductions, and retirement contributions
- Strong interpersonal skills to influence and collaborate across teams
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment focused on continuous improvement
