QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; Word processing techniques and computer software applications; School/District attendance and tardy policies and definitions; attendance record keeping methods and techniques. Knowledge of minority cultures and heritage as well as knowledge of the local community and the various services available to the migrant and minority community is required.
Must possess the skill to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply District rules, regulations and policies; effectively maintain record keeping systems and files in a timely manner; prepare reports and correspondence; type/word process accurately at a rate required for successful job performance; operate standard office equipment including computer terminal, copy machine, typewriter; perform accurate mathematical calculations using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Must possess the ability to counsel students as to reasons for truancy, compulsory attendance laws, and the Kern High School District Truancy Reduction Program; record and clear student absences and truancies on school forms and contracts, and on the Attendance System; report patterns of attendance problems to counselors and administrators; check with parents to verify absences; remind students to bring written excuses for absences and follow up to insure that written excuses are received and absences are cleared; meet regularly with school truancy team to identify and correct problems in the Truancy Reduction Program; make home visits to counsel student/parents where truancy is an issue (with counselor, probation officer, police officer and/or Dean); assist with various clerical duties within the school office when necessary and as time permits; perform related duties as required.
This position requires the ability to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating the parent community involvement programs; contact various local community service agencies to explain migrant and other programs, analyze family school needs, and to learn what services are available in school and community; participate in District parent involvement activities; work with minority students to enhance academic performance and extra-curricular participation; participate in District Community Advisor meeting as necessary.

EXPERIENCE: Two years of increasingly responsible clerical work, of which at least one year should involve school district experience or one year as an Attendance Clerk with the KHSD.
Successful applicant must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Completion of the twelfth grade is required, preferably supplemented by college level courses in the areas of sociology and school/community relations. Successful experience and first-hand knowledge in working with minority groups is required.

A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT, AS WELL AS A CURRENT COPY OF DMV DRIVING RECORD.
DUTIES OF POSITION: To reduce truancy at the school site using reports generated from the Attendance System. To contact and counsel students and parents in attendance related matters. To communicate with counselors, teachers and administrators involved in the Kern High School District Truancy Reduction Program. Employees in this job classification receive general supervision from a school administrator or his/her designee within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Successful candidate may oversee and supervise students assisting in truancy reduction; this position exercises responsibility for the accurate compiling and recording of information and data in the Truancy Reduction Program. Act as a liaison between migrant program, minorities, schools, migrant and minority parents, and community. This job classification is responsible for providing information and communication links with minority groups and must exercise initiative and possess communication skills in foreign languages.

STARTING SALARY:            $3,109.35 (monthly)
NUMBER OF MONTHS:         9.4 (to begin to as soon as possible)
NUMBER OF HOURS: 8 (daily working hours to be 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
                                                Truancy Reduction Clerk - 4 hrs. – School Comm. Spec. - 4 hrs.)
