About the Department

The Deputy Sheriff position performs protective service work in providing courtroom security within the Circuit and lower courts as assigned; petit jury orientation; assisting with grand juries; mental patient transportation; transportation of inmates to and from court; extradition of inmates from other states for a court appearance; academy instructor services; and service of civil process papers. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with more complicated tasks requiring advanced applications under direct supervision.

The preferred hiring amount is between $25.00 - $39.30 an Hour ($52,000.00 - $81,744.00 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Position Duties

  • Ensures the security and order of courtroom prior to and during court sessions; opens and closes courtrooms;
  • Transports and supervises the movements of prisoners to and from court;
  • Removes unruly individuals from the courtroom;
  • Responds and carries out all orders of the judge;
  • Serves summonses, notices, warrants and capias charges (primarily civil);
  • Transports persons with mental health issues to mental health facilities;
  • Receives and processes civil papers and maintains appropriate records;
  • Backs up secretary and serves as dispatcher;
  • Prepares periodic reports;
  • Attends periodic training in firearms use and basic law enforcement practices;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Deputy Sheriff assigned to Accreditation will additionally:
  • Maintain all Standard Operating Procedures to be in compliance with Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VALEPSC);
  • Gather and properly store Proofs of Compliance with Sheriff's Office policies;
  • Attend accreditation conferences for the purpose of keeping up to date with policies and changes to the accreditation program, and discussing best practices with members.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency;
  • Must be at least 20 years of age at time of application and 21 years of age by Basic Law Enforcement graduation;
  • Must be a US citizen or be a permanent resident alien who, in accordance with the requirements of the USCIS, is eligible and has applied for citizenship (proof is required). Note: an application for waiver of minimum qualifications (citizenship) must be obtained and approved by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS);
  • By employment start date, possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visit https://www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166);
  • Must have no felony convictions;
  • Successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement and field training;
  • Must obtain and maintain: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Certification in the Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN), and Certification in Firearms Proficiency.
  • Must be able to pass all phases of the screening process, which includes but not limited to: background investigation, physical examination, and pre-employment drug screen.

Skills: Thorough knowledge of court and security procedures; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City; general knowledge of all laws, rules, and regulations and procedures applicable to the execution and administration of civil processes; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions and to prepare clear concise reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City and court officials, employees and the general public; ability to oversee the preparation and maintenance of legal instruments, related records; ability to deal firmly and tactfully with the public.

Other Qualifications

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

Work environment involves entering and exiting vehicles and businesses and standing in court. Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and hazards.

Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important information through oral communications and/or to make final distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; Position may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal equipment.
