About the Department
This position plays a key role in supporting the department’s legal operations by providing skilled legal assistance under the direction of the Legal Manager. The employee will exercise a high level of independence in drafting legal documents, assisting with pre-trial preparation, and producing post-trial materials, including court orders, civil complaints, motions, and related pleadings in the child support process. Completed documents and orders are submitted to agency attorneys for review and filing.
Serving as a primary point of contact for legal complaints and inquiries from staff and local attorneys, this role requires strong communication and legal research skills. Responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, and relevant case law to ensure accuracy and compliance in all legal documents and procedures.
Position Duties
• Reviews case files and procedural history, applies legal templates, and makes appropriate modifications for attorney review
• Submits pleadings, motions, and orders through Enterprise Justice, ensuring all required attachments are included and tracking documents through final filing
• Conducts independent legal research, referencing child support statutes, guidelines, policies, and case law to support legal strategies
• Attends court hearings, assists attorneys with case presentation, documents evidence and rulings, and ensures all required documents are available
• Provides guidance to Child Support Agents on legal procedures, identifies complex legal issues, and collaborates with attorneys to determine appropriate next steps
• Reviews and incorporates court or opposing counsel modifications into legal documents prior to filing.
• Maintains organized records and ensures all legal documents are prepared and submitted within required timelines.
• Serves as a point of contact for staff and local attorneys regarding legal inquiries and case-related updates.
• Ensures all legal activities comply with applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and departmental policies.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training and two (2) years of experience as a paralegal; or graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field and two (2) years of experience as a paralegal; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Manager’s Preferences: Prior experience in civil or criminal code/law related to child support/family law with experience drafting legal documents in domestic law.
