This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.  This role is expected to have a work schedule of Monday through Friday, working from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required.

About the Lab:
The position will be 75% in the Yeh lab (Pathology) supporting studies on environmental algae and 25% in the Egan lab (Pediatrics) supporting studies on malaria.

 

About the Position:
We are seeking a diligent and reliable Laboratory Assistant II to provide crucial support for our research operations. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment to ensure the smooth functioning of daily activities.

Your primary duties will include operating autoclaves to sterilize glassware and equipment, preparing standard buffers and reagents according to detailed protocols, managing laboratory inventory and processing incoming orders, and washing and preparing specialized laboratory materials. You will also have the opportunity to provide basic technical assistance to researchers, which may include tasks like routine culturing of organisms under close supervision.

The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, follows instructions precisely, and is committed to upholding the highest standards of laboratory safety and cleanliness. One year of previous laboratory experience is required. This role is essential to our research team, providing the foundational support that enables groundbreaking scientific discovery.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with general laboratory techniques, especially basic molecular and cellular biology techniques

  • General understanding of scientific principles.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory Glassware Washer, these employees must have demonstrated initiative and good judgment.

  • Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.

  • Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.

  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.

  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines

  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.

  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.

  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.

  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment.  Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

  • Due to the nature of the work, this position will be fully onsite.

     

The expected pay range for this position is $31.87 (Step 1) to $38.48 (Step 10) per hour.  Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
