SUMMARY: The Special Education – Cedar Room/Intervention Support Para-Educator assists the special education program which provides services to students with behavioral challenges within a self-contained and general education setting. Responsibilities vary with the individual assignment, but typically include instruction of students, monitor student behavior, student hygiene, and preparation of materials, testing, and data collection /reporting.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Instructs/tutors students individually or in a small group setting under the direction of certificated employee(s)
- Acts as an instructional resource for classroom teachers
- Assists in the evaluation of student needs and in preparation of appropriate lessons and materials in collaboration with certified personnel
- Helps prepare and adapt lessons and activities with teacher approval, to be used as classroom activities and instruction
- Facilitates student involvement in school activities and/or community access
- Attends to the personal hygiene needs of students
- Maintains and/or assists with student behavior including maintenance of positive student behavior
- Monitor students with medical plans (possible seizures)
- Assist certificated staff with de-escalation and restraint based on individual student plans and approved district training
- Develops and maintains student records, student progress reports, and other related documents
- Assists with the supervision of students during building activities, such as assemblies and special programs
- Assists students with building emergency drills
- May attend staff meetings and building events, such as open house
- May attend related professional development activities and workshops
- Maintains effective communication with classroom teachers and administrators
- Maintains professional conduct when working with students, staff and parents
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
- Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Be at least eighteen years of age
- Possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED) and
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours); or an Associate’s degree (or higher); or a passing score (461) on a state local Para assessment exam.
- Proof of quaificaions must be included in application.
- Must complete the Para-educator Core Competencies within 75 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of traditional Native American cultures and values
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field
Recent previous para-educator experience
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
