Summary of Functions

The Dental Assistant will support the dental team through clinical and clerical assistance for patients of all ages in a rural setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide quality dental assisting duties in a dependable, responsible, safe and caring manner; take and develop x-rays as directed.
  • Electronically document patient visits, telephone contacts and treatments no less than 24 hours following each patient visit. Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist. Maintain records in compliance with professional, federal, and other applicable guidelines; assure compliance with accrediting agencies and with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Store dental instruments, supplies, materials and procedure set ups in the assigned area when not in use.
  • Keep assigned clinic areas properly stocked with all necessary supplies, materials and instruments at all times.
  • Order dental supplies and materials; maintain inventory. Order office supplies, maintain stock room inventory.
  • Maintain assigned clinic areas in a clean, orderly and aseptic condition.
  • Promptly remove used material and debris and prepare operatory to receive next patient.
  • Provide routine maintenance on all dental equipment including weekly monitoring and disinfection of delivery systems.
  • Inform supervisor or designee concerning needed repairs or adjustments of equipment in the clinic.
  • Promptly greet and seat dental patients in a friendly manner.
  • Assist in preparing for dental procedure.
  • Display a professional demeanor when interacting with patients and other clinic staff.
  • Promptly schedule patients for delivery of completed cases.
  • Follow all Privacy laws and policies
  • Assist in providing routine instructions including oral hygiene, oral disease prevention and health promotion and post operative instruction.
  • Assist in presentations to community groups regarding oral health and dental disease prevention.
  • Adhere to all applicable tribal, federal, or state privacy laws and regulations, including but not limited HIPPA and 42 CFR Part 2.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years experience in chair-side dental assistance or equivalent of training and experience.

Skills

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft programs and other computer software.
  • Must have excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of history, culture and health needs of Native Americans preferred; cultural sensitivity required, and/or willingness to learn.
  • Maintain professional appearance
  • Must accomplish tasks with efficiency and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in teams
  • Ability to adjust schedule and adjust quantity of treatment in order to effectively accommodate patients with urgent needs
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, the ability to handle conflict and crisis in a professional manner, must be computer literate, and maintain harmonious relationships
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems as indicated

Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be eligible for automobile insurance.
  • Must have valid driver’s license with insurable record and pass background and credentialing checks.
  • Must pass background check and obtain certification within one year of appointment. 
  • May be required to submit to yearly PPD and must maintain current CPR certification.
  • Hepatitis A & B vaccinations required.
  • TB test screening required,

    Physical Demands

    • Requires the ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
    • Significant portions of the job require extended sedentary periods; constant work with computers with repetitive action of hands and wrists; also standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping.
    • Travel to and from Spokane and Usk, WA.
    • Will require protective gloves or other appropriate personal protective equipment for safety precautions.
    • Common exposure to contagious and infectious diseases and body fluids.
    • Potential exposure to unpredictable behavior from patients, families and visitors.
    • This position requires occasional out-of-town travel to meetings and conferences. 

    Work Environment

    • The work is performed in a clinical setting.
