Position Duties

1.  Operates heavy automotive and specialized equipment including street sweeper, one-man sanitation truck, 40-yard container, truck and trailer. 
2.  Operates brush tractor with grapple buckets and hand load rear-loaders, balers, sorting lines, crane trucks and forklifts. 
3.  Fills the street sweeper water tanks and regulates valves controlling water supply. 
4.  Empties containers into the sanitation truck and operates the hydraulic packer to compact refuse.  Identifies non-collectable, acceptable waste. 
5.  Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on the equipment such as cleaning fueling, checking and adding oil, filling radiator and maintaining tire pressure.  Other minor maintenance may include adjusting or replacement of gutter brooms, conveyor belts, and pick-up brooms. 
6.  Performs safety checks on equipment. 
7.  Monitors to assure the quality in refuse collection, recyclable collection, and in the sorting and bailing of recyclable materials. 
8.  Operates portable radios. 
9.  Keeps daily log of work performed, mileage, tons dumped, equipment condition and performance. 
10.  Completes accident report forms and time sheets. 
11.  Completes public violation notifications and corrective action tags. 
12.  Repairs and delivers containers for commercial and residential customers. 
13. Operates city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
14.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive and specialized equipment.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.  

Knowledge of: 

  • Operation of various types of heavy equipment 
  • Hazards and safety rules and precautions in heavy equipment operation 
  • Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation 
  • Street layouts and routes

Skill in: 

  • Safe, efficient operation of assigned equipment and observance of traffic laws and regulations

Ability to: 

  • Record work activities and maintain daily logs and journals 
  • Detect needed repairs to make necessary operations adjustments 
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and ability to work independently 
  • Coordinate eye and hand movements 
  • Fill out accident reports 
  • Deal with the public in the resolution of sanitation service problems 
  • Identify hazardous or special waste and take appropriate reporting action
  • Operate city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Special Requirements

  • A class B commercial driver's license at time of application. 
    • Any employee operating a motor vehicle on City business must possess and retain a current, valid State of Arizona class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on City business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on City business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance.

    • Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all CDL holders. Selected candidates will be required to register and authorize the City of Glendale to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be considered for this role.   • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.

Work requires lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing and climbing. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Rough driving, driving in heavy traffic and exposure to dust, fumes, hot weather and hazardous materials such as solvents, adhesives paints, hot oil and other chemicals.
