About the Department
The Farmington Fire Department is hiring full-time Firefighters and Captains, as we transform to meet the needs of our growing community! We are looking for individuals who are passionate about public service and dedicated to protecting lives and property.
As a full-time Firefighter or Captain in our hybrid department, you will be part of a diverse team of both career and Paid-on-Call Firefighters working together to provide fire protection, emergency medical services, and public safety education. You will respond to a variety of emergencies and be involved in prevention efforts and community engagement to help keep Farmington safe.

The City of Farmington encompasses 86 square miles with a population nearing 26,000. The Farmington Fire Department’s annual call volume is approximately 1,500 calls for service.
Position Duties
Major Areas of Accountability
- Responds to emergencies in a safe, effective, and proficient manner.
- Responds to medical and fire emergencies. Performs fire and/or EMS activities which include, but are not limited to:
- Emergency medical care, fire suppression, rescue activities, operation of Fire/EMS equipment, and additional pertinent tasks.
- Assists in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing, as necessary, all department equipment. Completes proper checklists and reports damaged and improperly functioning equipment.
- Maintains facilities and performs housekeeping duties as directed.
- Assists in fire prevention duties and fire prevention education, etc.
- Assists with completion of assigned property inspections to ensure they are following applicable fire codes, ordinances, laws, regulations and standards.
- Conducts station tours for the public, schools, and community demonstrations and programs.
- Maintains all required EMS (EMT) and firefighter certifications/license.
- Keeps current department training expectations and developments to ensure techniques and practices are utilized.
- May be requested to conduct training based on topic expertise.
- Keeps a superior officer advised of fire suppression developments and performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
Schedule
- Able to work any shift assigned, including weekends and holidays.
- Available to work overtime as assigned and as needed on an emergency basis.
- Wages are based on 2920 working hours per year.
Physical Demands
- Normal vision is needed with or without correction. Requires both near and far acuity.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with others.
- Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 115 pounds.
- Must be able to drag an object weighing 115 lbs. or more.
- Walking and/or other mobility:
- Must be able to walk and crawl while carrying or lifting.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders while carrying or lifting.
- Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady oneself and keep from falling.
- Must be capable of reaching/extending the hands or arms in any direction.
- Must be capable of grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hands.
- Must be capable of picking, pinching with fingers; feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips)
- Must be able to operate equipment; hand tools, power tools, light and heavy equipment and operate fire apparatus.
- Must be able to multiply, divide, use fractions and read graphs (fire pump operations).
- Must be able to read textbooks.
- Must be able to interpret instructions and use logic to solve problems.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications for Firefighter
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 2-years experience as a firefighter in a full-time or paid-on-call capacity.
- Must possess a valid unrestricted Minnesota driver’s license.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment ability test and medical examination, background check, pre-employment drug test and psychological evaluation.
- I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 1001) Firefighter II Certification or equivalent as determined by the Fire Department.
- I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 1072) Hazardous Materials Operations Certification (this is an independent certification not affiliated within a Firefighter I or II Certification) or equivalent as determined by the Fire Department.
- I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 1002) Fire Apparatus Operator Certification or equivalent as determined by the Fire Department. (must have within 2 years of hire date)
- Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Advanced Certification (both Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board and National Registry of EMTS) (must have within 1 year of hire date).
- NFPA 1851: PPE Care & Inspection Certification
- State of Minnesota Licensed Firefighter upon employment.
- NIMS IS-100, NIMS IS-200, NIMS IS-700 and NIMS IS-800.
- Fire Inspector I certification (must have within 1 year of hire date).
Desired Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science, Fire Administration, Emergency Management or related field.
- Knowledge of fire and building codes.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License.
Qualifications for Captain:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 4-years experience as a firefighter in a full-time or paid-on-call capacity.
- Must possess a valid unrestricted Minnesota driver’s license.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment ability test and medical examination, background check, pre-employment drug test and psychological evaluation.
- I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 1001) Firefighter II Certification or equivalent as determined by the Fire Department.

- Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Advanced Certification (both Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board and National Registry of EMTS) (must have within 1 year of hire date).
- NFA Incident Safety Officer
- NFPA 1851: PPE Care & Inspection Certification
- State of Minnesota Licensed Firefighter upon employment.

Performance Criteria
- Demonstrated ability and knowledge to perform precarious fire suppression techniques and operate fire service equipment.
- Maintains firefighter skills.
- Successfully passes annual cardiovascular fitness evaluation, respiratory function test, and physical ability evaluation as prescribed by Fire Department standards.
- Active participation in fire department activities.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and continuing working relationships with other department members and the general public.
- Successful completion of required fire service training as prescribed by fire department policy.
- Successful completion of required fire service training as prescribed by fire department policy. Remains physically fit and capable of performing strenuous work under adverse conditions.
- Successful completion of one (1) year probation period.
