About the Department

The City of Lansing Parks & Recreation Department is seeking motivated After School Activity Leaders to assist with the development and instruction of extra curriculum activities for youth after regular school hours, including winter and spring break sessions. These leadership-driven positions provide an excellent chance for you to ignite creative learning to children in the community between the ages of 5 and 13 years old. This environment is a perfect fit for individuals who relish is interacting with small groups and not shy about leading discussions and initiating presentations.  If you like to have fun and are full of positivity and high energy, we encourage you to apply.

Ideal candidates should possess:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • At least one (1) year of college-level course work in Education, Human Services, or Parks and Recreation or related field preferred. 
  • Previous experience communicating and interacting with youth individually and in a group setting preferred. 
  • Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate their experience and competence in oral and written communication. 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Supervise participants to ensure rules are followed and provide appropriate discipline when needed.
  • Lead and instruct diverse after school activities for youth.
  • Keep records, organize and prepare and maintain materials and supplies, ensuring work areas and supplies are clean and secured at the end of each shift. 
  • The ability to communicate effectively with small groups, lead discussions and presentations.
After School Program will take place at the following Community Centers:

  • Foster Community Center (200 N Foster Ave, Lansing, MI 48912)
  • Gier Community Center (2400 Hall St, Lansing, MI 48906)
  • Alfreda Schmidt Community Center (5825 Wise Rd, Lansing, MI  48911)
  • Letts Community Center (1220 W Kalamazoo St, Lansing, MI 48915)
