About the Department
The Speech and Debate Coach is a part-time, non-benefited position responsible for actively advancing the mission, goals, and objectives of the LCCC School of Arts & Sciences as established by the college administration and department leadership. This includes direct accountability for: providing structured instruction and coaching to student competitors in individual and team speech and debate formats to foster high levels of success at collegiate tournaments; identifying, recruiting, and onboarding students who demonstrate the academic commitment and performance potential needed to excel both in the classroom and in competitive settings; managing the day-to-day operations, scheduling, and event coordination that support the broader functions of the Speech and Debate Program; mentoring and supporting student participants to encourage their academic progress and development as confident, articulate communicators; and serving as a visible, collaborative contributor to the campus and surrounding Community.
Compensation: $5,000 stipend.Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.
Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process.
Position Duties
- Coordinate travel and registration for events.
- Supervise team trips and student safety.
- Coordinates all practices, contests, meetings, study halls, and other team functions.
- Implement disciplinary actions and student conduct procedures as necessary.
- Support recruiting process in collaboration with department staff.
- Assist prospective students and communicate expectations of academic and team commitment.
- Encourage academic success, personal growth, and professional development.
Program Oversight and Institutional Engagement- Ensure alignment with institutional and National Forensic Association (NFA) objectives by coordinating team and program operations in accordance with LCCC’s strategic goals, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge and implementation of college and department policies.
- Ensure compliance with NFA bylaws.
- Attend departmental, institutional, and meetings.
- Maintain team morale and foster community within Speech and Debate Team.
- Follow all procurement and travel procedures.
- Submit annual recommend budgetary needs.
Administrative Duties - Establish efficient program operations by managing the administrative aspects of the team and program support.
- Coordinate scheduling and transportation to contests.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to:
- Maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors
- Comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
- Frequently move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities while performing the essential duties of this position
- Engage in multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
- The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
- Ability to effectively listen and perceive the nature of sounds and spoken words at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with emphasis in communication, education, or a related discipline OR a minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in competitive speech and debate coaching or participation.
- Valid Driver’s License and meet the College’s insurance provider’s eligibility requirements.
- Two (2) years of coaching experience or professional experience in speech and debate at the high school or collegiate level.
In lieu of the required degree, candidates with equivalent professional experience, industry certifications, or a combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with emphasis in communication, education, or a related discipline.
- Three (3) years of coaching experience or professional experience in speech and debate.
- One (1) year collegiate teaching experience.
Other Qualifications
If you are selected for the position, your appointment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. LCCC reserves the right to end this employment agreement should the results of your background investigation not be successful.
