The hours of this position are Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with alternate work schedule during breaks, intersessions, and winter and summer sessions.

The University Libraries empower intellectual exploration through building connections, collections, and community.    As an active partner in the University’s academic programs, the libraries are a major contributor to WCU’s core mission of student success. The faculty members serve as both instructors of information literacy and stewards of library resources. The staff members support the operation of the libraries whether it be assisting patrons at help desks, making the various library resources ready for patron use, or providing access to library technology. 

Located in the Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center, the Presser Music Library supports students and faculty from the Wells School of Music and musicians in the surrounding community.

As a member of the Library Public Services Unit, the Music Library Technician supports daily operations of the library including working collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure quality service; assisting with Library outreach and promotion efforts; providing oversight for the Help Desk, stacks maintenance, the equipment lending program, and public areas; and hiring, training and supervision of Help Desk student employees.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate customer service experience, excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to work collaboratively; experience working with student employees; strong project and time management skills; a background in music study and/or performance; and music library work experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee operation of the Presser Library Help Desk
  • Collaboratively create and maintain Presser Library Help Desk schedule
  • Maintain loaner equipment
  • Track equipment lifecycle and use of Presser Music Library technology, propose replacements, improvements and new solutions
  • Purchase supplies for the Presser Music Library, reconcile purchase card statements and maintain supply inventory
  • Assist with informational, directional, and known item inquiries and records statistics on all interactions
  • Circulate library materials using current library software
  • Assist with the basic maintenance of printers, scanners, and other library equipment
  • Supervise Library Assistants including planning, directing, and delegating tasks in collaboration with other library technicians
  • Plan, create, gather, and post social media content 
  • Plan and coordinate Presser Music Library events in collaboration with the Music Librarian and Library Outreach Team
  • Coordinate the shelving of materials in the music library collection and the retrieval of patron-initiated requests for physical items
  • Collaborate with the Stacks Technician and Resource Services staff to plan and perform quality control processes such as missing and claims returned searches, shelf reading, shifting projects, basic book repair, bindery, and collection inventory
  • Plan and coordinate physical and digital book displays
  • Open and/or close the building or service desks as scheduled
  • Work at other library service desks as scheduled
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Duties

  • Four years of library-clerical work including two years of advanced library clerical work comparable to the Library Assistant II, and graduation from high school OR
  • Two years of advanced library clerical work, and an associate degree or equivalent training with major course work in library science OR
  • A bachelor's degree

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library techniques, procedures, and working tools used in accessioning, cataloging, circulating, and maintaining library materials
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in bibliography preparation and the use of library research materials
  • Knowledge of reader comprehension and interest levels of library patrons
  • Skill in the application of the techniques and procedures used in cataloging
  • Ability to apply library methods and principles in circulation and providing reader services
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public

Minimum Qualifications

  • Customer service experience
  • Experience working with student (college) employees
  • Experience using Alma or related library service platforms
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • A background in music study and/or performance
  • Music library work experience
