Garden and Grounds Manager

Clayton Campus Operations is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Garden and Grounds Manager to join our team and play a key role in the start-up and success of our vegetable and flower garden. This role’s responsibilities include for all aspects of vegetable production, from seed germination and cultivation to harvest and post-season care. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a showcase-worthy garden and see your hard work used by our on-site kitchen staff. Additional responsibilities include directing and coordinating worker activities, such as planting, irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, grading, and record keeping. 

Grounds responsibilities will be to support the entire Clayton Campus with the implementation and management of campus-wide turf management and landscaping programs. You will directly manage Clayton grounds, garden, and landscaping teams, third-party suppliers, and service providers supporting overall grounds programs that are consistent with Clayton’s operational goals.

Garden and Grounds Manager Required Experience

  • Education: Advanced education in sustainable agriculture or equivalent field experience.

  • Years of Related Experience: 5-7 years’ minimum relevant experience, prior supervisory experience required.

  • Licenses/Certifications Must have a valid driver’s license. HLT certification for pesticide and disease control.

Garden and Grounds Manager Responsibilities

  • Crop Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive crop plans, including crop rotation, planting schedules, and variety selection, ensuring maximum yield and productivity while adhering to organic farming principles.

  • Seeding and Transplanting: Manage seeding and transplanting processes, including nursery management, soil preparation irrigation, fertilization, and pest control.

  • Field Management: Oversee and execute the cultivation, irrigation, and pest management activities, ensuring that all practices follow organic standards and maintain the health and quality of crops and soil.

  • Inventory Management: Monitor and maintain accurate inventory records of seeds, equipment, supplies, and other necessary materials for vegetable production. Operates a variety of farm equipment.

  • Manage and create operational standards and maintain a composting operation.

  • Manage installation and maintenance of high tunnel and irrigation equipment.

  • Collaborate with Wellness team for education and engagement programs.

  • Collaborate with Culinary team for farm to table program.

  • Collaborates with Campus Operations Leadership to ensure work aligns closely with overall vision, mission, and goals.

  • Participate in weekly management meetings.

  • Available for after-hours situations that may fall under the purview of garden maintenance.

  • Oversee the upkeep of Clayton Corporate Campus which includes Clayton Road, Clayton Lodge and Cabin Units, Clayton Cottage, Clayton Bradley Academy, and additional temporary housing units.

  • Oversee the preparation of soil plant beds, established by seed or transplants, and maintains annual perennial flowers in aesthetically pleasing arrangements across all Campus locations.

  • Develops detailed annual plans for the seasonal rotation of plants, flowers, etc.

  • Reports metrics and progress to Campus Operations Manager.

  • Maintains calendars and budgets including all grounds crew department for personnel and grounds expenditures.

  • Maintains HLT certification for pesticide and disease control.

  • Manages inventory of department tools, equipment, building / shop supplies, and chemicals.

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations, standards, and requirements.

  • Prepares and maintains reports and records to comply with regulatory statutory, and departmental requirements.

  • Sets clear goals, priorities, objectives, and expectations for all Garden and Grounds Team Members, ensuring those goals align with the overarching Campus Operations mission and vision.

  • Responsible for hiring, training, and setting schedules for a positive and productive team.

  • Owns the Team Member Experience for both Garden and Grounds teams, ensuring all TMs have the tools, resources, and support they need to be successful in their roles.

  • Provides ongoing feedback to support the performance and development of each TM

  • Consistently exemplify Clayton’s Values and set the standard for a positive culture within the Garden and Grounds teams

Garden and Grounds Manager Skills

  • Capacity to foster an environment of teamwork which promotes Clayton’s values.

  • Knowledge of Organic and regenerative growing practices.

  • High School Diploma and advanced education in sustainable agriculture or equivalent field experience.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Ability to complete projects within the proposed timeline.

  • Ability to use problem-solving skills in a time sensitive environment.

  • Driver’s License. Experience operating gardening and landscaping equipment.

  • Ability to build and manage a positive and efficient team.

  • Portfolio of previous Garden and Grounds experience
