Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Building Official, the Inspector I is a critical role in ensuring public safety by conducting technical inspections and plan reviews for residential and commercial construction projects. This position is responsible for enforcing building codes, regulations, and ordinances to maintain high standards of safety and compliance. The Inspector I will contribute to the integrity of construction projects and must obtain the required certification within six months of employment, ensuring expertise in the field.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three years’ experience in field work requiring interpretation of building plans.
- A valid Texas driver’s license.
4. Commercial and Residential Building Inspector Certification
Essential Job Functions:
Multi-Family
- Inspects multi-family new and existing structures to ensure compliance with safety and other requirements.
- Reviews and interprets building plans, codes, and ordinances, providing clear explanations of requirements and restrictions.
- Communicates effectively with stakeholders via phone, email, and written correspondence.
- Prepares and maintains inspection reports, logs, and files.
- Develops constructive relationships with City officials, departments, community groups, and the public.
Building Inspection
- Conducts residential and commercial inspections at various construction stages, ensuring compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Recommends necessary adjustments based on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing code compliance.
- Assesses structural damage after disasters.
- Performs related duties and research for building code and policy modifications.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Operational characteristics, services and activities of building inspections.
- Structural engineering concepts, design and engineering mathematics.
- Plumbing, mechanical, electrical, building codes.
- Safety standards and methods of building construction for commercial, industrial and residential buildings.
- Federal, state, local laws, codes and regulations as applied to building inspection (including management, retention, and disclosure information.)
Skills in:
- Analyzing building plans and existing structures for code compliance.
- Learning codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City, including currently adopted Building Codes and Zoning Ordinance.
- Reading and interpreting complex building plans, specifications and building codes.
- Determining if construction plans conform to the City’s adopted code requirements.
- Communicating clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors.
