We are seeking a Senior Transmission Line Design Engineer to join our engineering team. Reporting to the Engineering Lead, Transmission you will play a key role in designing and safeguarding the infrastructure that powers Nova Scotia’s energy future.

This is not a routine engineering role, it’s an opportunity to lead some of the most technically demanding transmission projects in Atlantic Canada. You’ll apply advanced engineering principles to design resilient, efficient, and sustainable transmission systems that can withstand the region’s toughest coastal conditions.

Your work will help Nova Scotia Power achieve its ambitious goal of 80% renewable energy by 2030, supporting major grid modernization efforts and landmark projects such as the $217M Wasoqonatl 345kV interprovincial transmission line and large-scale wind interconnections.

As part of the team, you’ll take on the Maritime Transmission Challenge, tackling:

  • Extreme ice loading – advanced modeling and de-icing strategies
  • Salt spray corrosion – innovative coatings, materials, and mitigation techniques
  • Hurricane and nor’easter resilience – Category 2+ wind and surge design
  • Dense forest corridors – complex vegetation management solutions
  • Challenging geology – from bedrock blasting to peatland foundations

This role offers the opportunity to combine technical excellence with real-world impact and building infrastructure that will define how Nova Scotia is powered for decades to come.

Key elements of this role include::

Lead Complex Projects

  • Engineer overhead transmission lines from 69kV to 345kV, supporting system reliability and renewable energy integration.

  • Perform advanced structural analysis using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER to deliver optimized, resilient designs.

  • Serve as Professional of Record on major capital projects exceeding $20 million.

  • Develop specialized, innovative design solutions for challenging maritime environments.

Drive Technical Standards

  • Review and stamp engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Maintain and evolve Nova Scotia Power’s transmission design standards, incorporating new technologies and best practices.

  • Ensure adherence to CSA C22.3, IEEE 738/1346, and NESC standards.

  • Oversee consultant deliverables and QA/QC processes, ensuring alignment with NS Power’s technical and safety requirements.

Build the Future Grid

  • Support integration of smart grid systems and battery storage technologies into the transmission network.

  • Design infrastructure enabling offshore wind development and interprovincial connections critical to the Atlantic energy corridor.

  • Contribute to the Atlantic Loop planning and design initiatives.

  • Embed cybersecurity principles into modern line design to protect critical infrastructure.

Lead and Influence

  • Mentor junior engineers and EITs, fostering professional growth and technical excellence.

  • Represent Nova Scotia Power within industry bodies such as IEEE PES, CIGRE, and CSA working groups.

  • Publish and present technical findings to advance innovation in the transmission engineering field.

  • Collaborate with universities and research partners on applied engineering studies and pilot projects.

These skills will make you successful::

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Structural Engineering (CEAB-accredited)
  • You are a professional member of Engineers Nova Scotia or are eligible and committed to obtaining membership within twelve months of starting the position.
  • 5–8 years of progressive transmission line design experience
  • Proven project management experience on multi-million-dollar infrastructure builds
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting and stakeholder consultation processes
  • Understanding of renewable energy interconnection requirements
  • Strong technical writing and stakeholder presentation skills
  • Demonstrated mentoring or team leadership experience
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, construction, and environmental disciplines
  • Direct coastal or maritime utility experience is an asset
  • Exposure to grid modernization, smart grid, or energy storage projects is an asset
  • Active involvement in professional societies and published technical work is an asset

Technical Competencies

  • Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE
  • Familiarity with SAPS, TOWER, RISA, or equivalent structural analysis tools
  • Experience working with GIS, LiDAR, and 3D modeling platforms
  • Deep knowledge of CSA C22.3, IEEE, and NESC standards
  • PLS-TOWER proficiency for lattice tower design is an asset
