JOB TITLE: TEACHER ASSISTANT - VIRTUAL LEARNING SUPPORT FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
PAY GRADE: G
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under the general supervision of the principal or designee, the Teacher Assistant – Virtual Learning Support facilitates and supports students enrolled in NCVPS In Real Time (IRT) synchronous and asynchronous courses. This position ensures students are engaged in live sessions, provides basic technical support, monitors progress, and collaborates with the NCVPS teacher and school staff to support student success.
Reports to the principal or designee.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instructional Support
- Supervises students during synchronous (live) NCVPS sessions to ensure active participation and engagement.
- Supports students with asynchronous coursework by encouraging time management and task completion.
- Communicates with NCVPS instructors regarding student needs, concerns, or progress.
- Monitors Canvas and other platforms for student assignments, announcements, and progress reports.
- Encourages positive study habits, self-discipline, and respectful online communication.
Technology Support
- Assists students in logging in to Zoom, Canvas, and other required platforms. ? Provides basic troubleshooting for device, audio, and video issues.
- Reports technical issues promptly to the appropriate school personnel or technology support.
- Ensures audio/visual equipment is set up and ready for synchronous sessions.
Monitoring & Student Behavior
- Maintains a focused, structured environment during synchronous and asynchronous sessions.
- Encourages appropriate online behavior and digital citizenship.
- Reports discipline or participation concerns to the principal or designated supervisor.
Communication & Collaboration
- Collaborates with the NCVPS teacher, school-based support staff, administration, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders to ensure student success.
- Participates in professional development related to the IRT program, Canvas, and best practices for online learning support.
- Communicates program updates to the school team as needed.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
- This position is a dual employment position and will also require the employee to be a bus driver. The employee must be able to acquire and maintain the appropriate licensure to drive a school bus. Failure to acquire, maintain or perform the duties of both positions will result in dismissal from both components of the dual employment position.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Must meet the “Highly Qualified” requirements under No Child Left Behind: Associate’s degree in education or related field and two years of experience working with students preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to perform light work and operate equipment related to the job.
- Data Conception: Ability to understand and monitor digital learning platforms.
- Interpersonal Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and instructors.
- Language Ability: Ability to read and understand course materials, instructions, and digital communications.
- Verbal Aptitude: Ability to explain procedures clearly to students.
- Numerical Aptitude: Ability to manage attendance records and track progress data.
- Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and support students in an online setting.
- Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk, hear, and use technology for communication.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of best practices for student engagement in online learning. ? Familiarity with virtual learning platforms (Zoom, Canvas preferred).
- Ability to maintain a structured learning environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a positive rapport with students, NCVPS teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to monitor student progress and provide encouragement or redirection as needed.
- Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues and seek assistance when necessary.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
