Summary:
The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) is a member of a building/program team assigned to support administration and staff with program implementation. The function of this position is to provide teacher leadership on a wide variety of programs, policies and procedures. The position includes consultation at the student, classroom and/or school wide levels and leading professional development, dissemination of information regarding available resources, leadership with IEP meeting planning and preparation, and facilitation. The TOSA promotes a productive and positive work environment by providing supportive, non-evaluative assistance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Serve as an instructional leader driving student achievement and social-emotional growth outcomes.
- Lead teachers in planning effective, developmentally appropriate programming for students.
- Provide direct instructional coaching to multiple teachers throughout the school year
- Lead student data analysis process at the individual teacher level to the school-wide level. Facilitate data conversations and subsequent instructional planning with teachers on an ongoing basis.
- Provide leadership and planning of instruction for the day-to-day operation of special education programs.
- Manage and support student discipline and supervise behavior management teams.
- Assist with the interviewing and selection of professional and support staff.
- Identify needs of staff and assist in the planning and implementation of staff development.
- Coordinate implementation of planned curriculum and assessment processes.
- Coordinate the multi-disciplinary team in the development of IEPs.
- Develop and aide in the development and implementation of transition plans.
- Procure necessary instructional materials and equipment as indicated by programmatic needs.
- Ability to de-escalate students.
- Ability to use passive restraints to prevent a student from hurting self or others.
- May require the need to physically restrain students who are violent and/or self-injurious.
- Liaise with other CCIU and LEA staff to ensure continuum of special education programming for all students served.
- Conduct building staff meetings for a variety of purposes: professional development, dissemination of pertinent information, special education best practices, curricular initiatives, build positive culture, etc.
- Collaborate with mentor teachers and their assigned teachers.
- Maintain highest levels of expertise and knowledge regarding best practices in special education and instructional pedagogy.
- Ensure adherence to state and federal special education regulations and CCIU board policy.
- Provide technical assistance, information, and training in special education topics and best practice strategies to support the needs of students, faculty, staff, and parents.
- Provide technical assistance and training to develop effective programs and services including assessment, data collection, and IEP development.
- Build capacity by helping educators and others at the local level develop skills needed to work with students with special education needs.
- Support staff with caseload special education students through review and communication of specially designed instruction, goals and objectives, appropriate strategies, and progress monitoring as indicated by students’ IEPs.
- Lead department initiatives in the areas of instructional quality, curriculum implementation, and program implementation.
- Disseminate information regarding available resources to teachers, schools, and the community, as appropriate.
- Review and analyze building, program, and student level data.
- Facilitate student outcome data meetings with teachers and administrators.
- Provide program and curriculum coaching to support onboarding and retention of staff in the form of observation and feedback and modeling of evidence-based strategies faded to independence upon mastery.
- Perform additional duties as needed and specified by CCIU.
Qualifications: - Education and Experience
- Bacehlor's degree in general education or special education required
- Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Special Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years of special education teaching experience, school-age level required
- Evidence of teacher leadership in previous positions preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; Ability to facilitate group trainings, meetings and/or conflict
- Professional Credentials
- Special Education or General Education Certification required
- Principal or Supervisor of Special Education Certification preferred
Salary 2025-2026 School Year (Professional):
Instructional I: $64,626 - $97,419/yr.
Instructional II: $67,430 - $101,321/yr.
Master's Degree: $71,933 - $110,645/yr.
Master's Degree + 15 Credits: $75,243 - $115,001/yr.
Master's Degree + 30 Credits: $76,932 - $117,086/yr.
