North Shore Health is a 16 bed critical care hospital with a 37 bed long term care facility attached.

Job Description:

Under general supervision, develops and coordinates Cook County’s and North Shore Health’s (NSH’s) Public Information programming, including communication policies and programs, media relations, management of visual identity and brand, public engagement, communication plans and communication training programs for staff. The Public Information Coordinator serves as the primary contact for media outlets, spokesperson for the County and NSH, and is responsible for providing accurate and timely information to members of the public and the media. Provides communications recommendations to County and NSH leadership on sensitive and major issues and anticipates and coordinates communication issues of organizational and community concern.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this classification.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

1.     Coordinates development of integrated strategies, plans, and programs designed to ensure that all communication and public relations efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting the mission and advancement goals of both organizations.

2.     Develops, and coordinates comprehensive communication programs, to include broadcast media, social media and publications, in close alignment with other institutional communications and/or public relations activities.

3.     Provides proactive assistance to senior leaders regarding public information matters, to include aiding in researching, exchanging information, and developing messages.

4.   Serves as spokesperson or prepares spokespersons and messaging.

5.   Manages media relations program and major communication channels in conjunction with departments and committees supporting communication.

6.   Develops and coordinates annual Communications Plans consistent with the County’s and the NSH’s overall mission, vision, values, and in accordance with applicable policies.

7.   Responsible for production of documents, newsletters, brochures and flyers and coordinates distribution.

8.   Responsible for concept development, production, and placement of advertising media.

9.   Manages production of communication materials.

10.   Develops and maintains the Visual Identity Guide and manages use of County and NSH logo(s).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

       Requires a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism or closely related field;

OR

       Three (3) years of experience in public relations or communications, experience designing and managing social media sites, creating concise and visually engaging communications collateral, communication planning, and communicating with the press and other media. 

Required Certifications/Licenses

·       Must have a valid driver’s license.

Internal/External Relationships:

·       Regular interaction with County Board, administration and department heads.

·       Regular interaction with NSH Administration and Department Leadership.

·       Regular interactions with emergency response organizations at the local, state and federal levels, and neighboring jurisdictions, including Grand Marais and Grand Portage. 

·       Regular interactions with local, state, and national media.

Working Environment:

·       Work is performed in an office environment.

·       Position is subject to work outside normal work schedule, shift extensions, call-ins and vacation cancellation.

·       Travel by car is required.

Physical Requirements Of This Position:

  • Sit or stand at a desk for extended periods of time to perform work at a computer and/or talk on the phone.
  • Hear and speak effectively to communicate in person, on camera, and over the phone with contacts listed under Internal/External Relationships above.
  • Visual acuity to read computer screens and documents and to see to drive a vehicle.
  • Apply physical coordination to safely drive an automobile throughout the county under various road and weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to move to and about the various work sites entailed in Essential Functions above.
  • Manual dexterity to:

o   Type on a keyboard and use a computer mouse; 

o   Perform manual tasks such as handwriting and compiling material.

  •       Office work may include reaching for documents and supplies, standing or kneeling to search through file cabinets, fingering to find files, grasping documents, and repetitive motions such as typing and sorting/compiling material.
  • Ability to climb stairs, walk and traverse uneven and other outdoor terrain and indoor buildings that may not be ADA compliant in meeting and serving victims, families, and other contacts throughout the county.
  •         Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·       Ability to implement cohesive communication and public relations strategies and plans on an institutional basis.

·       Communicate both verbally and written and work effectively within a diverse community.

·       As part of a team, ability to analyze complex communication problems, interpret operational needs, develop and propose integrated, communication solutions.

·       Use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.

·       Quickly develop relationships with local and regional media contacts.

·       Provide effective recommendations on strategic and/or critical communication issues and to exercise effective judgement.

·       Write executive-level communications for internal and external audiences.

·       Maintain confidentiality.

·       Knowledge of graphic design and ability to maintain social media platforms.

·       Knowledge of the organizations’ mission, vision, values

·       Implement cohesive communication and public relations strategies and plans on an institutional basis.

 

Additional Information:

Starting Hourly Rate is $29.28 to $31.67 hourly
