POSITION DESCRIPTION
Child Nutrition Assistant
Reports to: Child Nutrition Manager, Child Nutrition Director
Purpose: The Child Nutrition Assistant prepares and serves breakfast, lunch and other food to school children and adults in a courteous, customer service oriented manner. The CNA is responsible for organizing and setting up equipment and workstations per the direction of the CNS Manager. Duties are performed as required by the USDA, health, food service and other regulations and laws. The CNA must demonstrate proper cafeteria equipment operation skills.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Food preparation and service tasks as assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Food storage tasks as assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Recordkeeping tasks as assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Practice personal hygiene and proper sanitation procedures.
- Turn on, test and monitor equipment at the beginning of the day.
- Prepare food according to written and oral instructions.
- Serve breakfast, lunch and a la carte items.
- Handle cashiering responsibilities including food and ticket sales and serving a la carte items and those assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Replenish food and maintain clean serving areas.
- Monitor food and equipment temperatures at all times.
- Exhibit courtesy and understanding to all staff, students and customers.
- Perform dishwashing duties of cooking, serving and eating utensils and tools and any other cleaning tasks as assigned by the Child Nutrition Manager.
- Set up and break down serving areas.
- Receive, stock and rotate incoming and outgoing inventory as assigned or needed.
- Participate in formal and informal training.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of sanitation practices.
- Exhibit professional behavior of a reliable employee.
- Perform preparation duties for the next day.
- Maintain a neat, clean and safe work environment.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the Child Nutrition Manager or Director.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- General knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing and serving meats, breads, vegetables and other foods on a large scale
- General knowledge of the use or care of food preparation equipment
- Skill in the use of standardized and specialized kitchen utensils and equipment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and school staff
- Ability to keep confidential and exhibit sensitivity to students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch assistance
- Ability to work with others in a close, fast paced environment
- Ability to address customers in a pleasant, courteous manner
- Must be able to read and write.
- Must be willing and able to follow directions, written and spoken.
- Must be able to do simple math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must be skilled in cooperation, teamwork, responsibility and initiative in the workplace.
- Required to obtain and maintain a yellow bus driver’s license if hours of employment is 30-hours or more (employed after June 12, 2002).
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to physically withstand hours of heavy work under production pressure.
- Work is considered moderate to heavy physical work requiring the exertion of and/or lifting of up to 50 pounds of force.
- Must be able to withstand heat, exposure to chemicals, and standing for long periods of time.
- Some walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling can be involved. Must be able to bend, squat, and reach overhead.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in quantity food preparation preferred.
- ServSafe certification is a plus.
Term of Employment: 10 Months
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Grade: NC04 ($2600 - $4294, depending on experience,
training, and certifications)
