JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Exceptional Children Program Transition Specialist
LOCATION: CIA/Exceptional Children
SALARY: Teacher Salary Schedule
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Exceptional Children Programs
JOB GOAL: To coordinate, deliver, and evaluate transition education services at the system level, in conjunction with other educators, families, and representatives of community organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:
- Master's Degree or higher from an accredited college/university with five years of teaching experience. North Carolina Licensure in an area of Exceptional Children preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of federal and state rules governing programs and services for exceptional children.
- In-depth knowledge of the various disabilities covered under the exceptional children programs.
- In-depth knowledge of the NC Occupational Course of Study.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Post Secondary Transition component of the IEP.
- Comprehensive knowledge of growth and development of children with special needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Monitor the implementation of the Occupational Course of Study by visits to classrooms and community training sites.
- Audit records of OCS students to assure graduation requirements have been met.
- Monitor implementation of the Life Skills Program by visits to classrooms and community training sites.
- Attend IEP meetings to assist with transition plan development upon request.
- Identify and procure instructional materials for the Occupational Course of Study and Life Skills Program.
- Provide Staff Development for teachers and other school system staff in transition related areas.
- Educate the community on transition initiatives such as the Occupational Course of Study and the Life Skills program through presentations and brochures.
- Monitor and audit Post Secondary plans within the IEP of high school students.
- Collaborate with adult services agencies to increase efficiency of service provisions.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Executive Director, or designee.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community members.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid NC driver's license.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, teachers, students, administrators, community leaders, agency representatives and others.
- Ability to develop and compile a variety of records and reports.
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
