The Lewis Central Community School District is seeking a reliable and motivated Maintenance Technician/Bus Driver to join our Facilities and Transportation teams. This full-time, year-round position plays an important role in helping to maintain the safety, appearance, and functionality of our buildings and grounds along with helping to support students with transportation needs in the afternoons. This person must have or be able to obtain a CDL and pass all DOT and Department of Education requirments including a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, DOT physical and school bus driver authorization.

Job Title: Maintenance Technician/Bus Driver
FSLA: Hourly, Non-Exempt (5 hours scheduled Overtime Weekly)
Reports to: Buildings and Grounds Director (Maintenance) / Transportation Director (Bus Driving)
Position Summary
This hybrid role is responsible for supporting both the maintenance and operational needs of District facilities and student transportation. Approximately 70% of the role focuses on general maintenance tasks during the school year, with the remaining 30% dedicated to student transportation in the afternoons. During non-student days such as holidays and summer breaks, the role will focus entirely on maintenance duties. Flexibility is essential, as daily tasks may shift based on district needs, weather, or student transportation requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Duties (Approx. 70% of Role during school year)
- Performs general maintenance tasks, including light carpentry, painting, basic repairs, hauling, and minor equipment maintenance.
- Assists with preventive maintenance of building systems and equipment.
- Supports grounds-related duties such as upkeep of outdoor areas, including mowing, trimming trees and grass, trash removal, and pressure washing, etc.
- Operates hand and power tools safely and effectively (e.g., drills, saws, and other maintenance tools requiring skill and caution).
- Operates district vehicles and motorized equipment safely (e.g., zero-turn mowers, ATVs/UTVs, golf carts, trucks) as needed.
- Assists with inventory tracking and recommends materials or supplies for maintenance tasks.
- Responds to weather-related needs, including snow and ice removal, using plows, snow blowers, shovels, and other equipment as directed.
- Fills daily custodial vacancies as needed.
- Supports other maintenance staff or trades and may respond to district-wide emergencies.
- May be required on-call for after-hours emergencies.
Bus Driver Duties (Approx. 30% of Role during school year – Afternoon Routes)
- Completes pre-trip and post-trip inspections on buses.
- Operates the bus safely and efficiently while transporting students on assigned afternoon routes.
- Ensures students follow bus rules and maintains order on the bus, working with a bus monitor when assigned.
- Confronts emergency situations according to standard safety procedures.
- Communicates with parents, students, and staff regarding transportation concerns.
- Maintains accurate records, including route logs and incident reports.
Education/Experience/Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Demonstrated knowledge or experience in general maintenance tasks such as light carpentry, painting, basic repairs, hauling, and equipment upkeep.

Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and related maintenance equipment.

Previous experience in a school, commercial, or facilities maintenance setting preferred, but not required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsement and have the ability to operate District vehicles safely.
- Must obtain a School Bus Driver Authorization Card from the State of Iowa. Paid training provided.
- Consistent attendance is required.
Hours/Schedule
Total scheduled work is 9 hours per day (5 hours of scheduled overtime per week), including maintenance and student transportation duties. During the school year, approximately 30% of the day will involve afternoon bus routes; the remaining 70% will focus on maintenance responsibilities. During non-student days such as holidays and summer breaks, the position will focus entirely on maintenance duties. Additional hours may occasionally be required for trainings, meetings, or emergency needs, which are paid. Flexibility is essential to balance maintenance responsibilities with bus driving duties.
Rate of pay
Hourly rate to be determined based off of experience and education.

This full-time, year-round position is eligible for the District’s comprehensive benefits package. This includes fully paid single coverage for health and dental insurance, with the option to purchase family coverage. All employees are automatically enrolled in the state-sponsored retirement program, IPERS, beginning on their first day of employment. The District contributes 9.44% of your wages, while employees contribute 6.29%.
Paid Leaves/Holidays
The District offers both paid sick leave, paid personal leave, and paid vacation leave for this position. This position has 8 paid holidays; 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day following, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Memorial Day.
