Job Summary
The Child-Specific Paraprofessional provides direct support to a student with significant medical needs, ensuring their safety, comfort, and access to educational opportunities throughout the school day. This role involves assisting with basic health monitoring, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and collaborating with school staff, families, and healthcare professionals. While not a medical practitioner, the paraprofessional plays a vital role in implementing health-related accommodations outlined in the student’s IEP. Candidates with experience in healthcare support roles (e.g., CNA) are preferred. The paraprofessional must be dependable, communicative, and willing to complete specialized training as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the integration of health-related needs into the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), attending meetings when medical factors are discussed.
- Collaborate with school nurses, teachers, and community agencies to ensure coordinated care and avoid duplication of services.
- Maintain open communication with parents to support health and safety practices, including communicable disease control.
- Monitor the student’s physical environment for safety and cleanliness; assist in implementing safety and emergency exit plans.
- Assist in obtaining and maintaining appropriate health-related supplies, including daily checks of the student’s 'go-bag'.
- Accompany student(s) daily on the bus/ provided transportation to and from school, during field trips, and other school-related activities, ensuring their safety, comfort, and overall well-being.
- Accompany the student throughout the school day, including transitions and transportation, ensuring safety and comfort.
- Take and document basic health assessments such as daily vitals, under the guidance of the school nurse.
- Make referrals to the school nurse or appropriate personnel when health concerns arise and document outcomes.
- Participate in conferences with staff and parents as needed to support the student’s health and educational progress.
- Complete training related to specific medical equipment (e.g., LVAD alarm/code awareness) as required for the assigned student.
- Prepare and follow a professional growth plan to enhance skills relevant to the role.
- - Perform other duties as assigned to support the student’s health and educational access.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience working with students with disabilities or in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Basic knowledge of health monitoring procedures (e.g., taking vitals).
- CNA or similar healthcare certification is a plus.
- Ability to follow health protocols and collaborate with medical and educational staff.
- Strong communication, reliability, and discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Willingness to complete specialized training related to student-specific medical needs
