THE MERIT SYSTEM AND THE PERSONNEL COMMISSION The San Mateo County Office of Education has utilized the Merit System since 1966 to ensure that classified employees are selected, promoted and retained without favoritism or prejudice. The Personnel Commission oversees a Civil Service (Merit) System of personnel management for San Mateo County Office of Education employees. The Merit System is a method of personnel management which is designed to promote the efficiency and economy of the workforce and the good of the public by providing for the selection and retention of employees, promotional opportunities, in-service training, and other related matters on the basis of merit, fitness, and the principle of “like pay for like work."

Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial and routine building maintenance activities involved in maintaining assigned County Office of Education (Office) buildings and facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition; cleans classrooms, offices, hallways and other facilities as assigned; performs a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs; moves, arranges, and assembles furniture and equipment; and performs related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Performs a variety of custodial and routine building maintenance activities involved in maintaining assigned Office buildings and facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition; sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, waxes and polishes floors; vacuums rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other assigned work areas; spot cleans and shampoos carpets. Cleans classrooms, offices, hallways and other facilities as assigned; dusts, sanitizes and wipes down desks, tables, furniture, countertops, doors, equipment, walls, windows and woodwork; spot mops spills; removes gum, debris, cobwebs and graffiti as needed. Picks up paper and other debris from floors, school grounds, walkways, parking lots and areas adjacent to facilities; sweeps doormats, loading docks, dumpsters and concrete surfaces adjacent to buildings as assigned; empties waste and recycling receptacles; replaces liners. Performs a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs; installs, repairs, adjusts and replaces electrical, plumbing and various other parts, components and fixtures such as outlets, washers, flush valves, faucets, drains and toilets; replace light bulbs and ballasts; unclogs drains and repairs leaks. If a medical plan is selected, the employee will receive a contribution of $1,300.00/month toward the selected medical plan (through CalPERS), Delta Dental, and Life Insurance. The employee pays the balance of their health premiums from their gross earnings on a pre-tax basis. If a medical plan is not selected, employees will receive a contribution of $300.00/month toward single coverage for Delta Dental, and Life Insurance. A vision plan (VSP) is also available. Employees pay the worker contribution to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). This position is represented by California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter #887. Pursuant to Article 2 of the CSEA 887 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the County Office shall deduct in accordance with the CSEA dues and fees schedule from the wages of all employees. Requirements / Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience providing the job knowledge, skills, and ability for successful job performance will be considered for positions in this classification. EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade; and One (1) year of experience in janitorial or custodial work or related experience. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: This position may require employees to travel locally, and specifically, employees must be able get themselves to different locations during their workday. Employees will be responsible for ensuring that they can timely move between locations during their workday either via driving themselves with a valid driver’s license or using other modes of transportation, including a ride hailing service, taking a taxi, carpooling, bicycling, etc. LOCATION: San Mateo County Office of Education - Various Buildings Under Assignment EXAMINATION PROCESS: The examination process for this classification may consist of: 1. A performance in-person examination (TBD); and 2. An oral board virtual examination (TBD).
