The Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore Instructional Assistant

Description
The Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore (AAES), in partnership with Old Dominion University (ODU), is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Instructional Assistant. This is a stipend supported position focused on supporting student achievement through engaging instruction, collaborative partnerships, professional learning opportunities for teachers, and innovative instructional support within the AAES program. The Instructional Assistant will report directly to the ODU Director of the Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore and work closely with the AAES STEM Specialist, who oversees instruction across all four participating high schools—Arcadia, Nandua, Chincoteague, and Northampton. The position will be based at Northampton High School.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree (required); bachelor’s degrees and active Virginia Teaching license (preferred).
Teaching experience at the high school or collegiate level, with a focus on STEM education (preferred but not required).

Preferred Skills:

Evidence of strong teaching, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Familiarity with NASA partnerships and aerospace industry trends is a plus.
Experience in curriculum development and assessment.
Experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Sciences, Aerospace or a related field.
Open to the instructional coaching cycle.

Ability to inspire and motivate students from diverse backgrounds.

Performance Responsibilities
Teaching and Instruction:

Assigned a based high school to provide instructional support of the AAES 9th-grade courses in Accomack and Northampton County Public Schools.
Serve as the instructional assistant for the AAES 4th block course (4x4) for either Term 1 Computer Science Principles (10011) and/or Term 2 Engineering Explorations (8450).
Work collaboratively with the AAES STEM Specialist to be knowledgeable and able to provide support for the classroom lessons and projects.
Engage with the Canvas Courses to ensure knowledge of student lessons.
Attend weekly planning meetings.
Responsible for taking daily attendance.
Assist the AAES STEM Specialist with updating grades within the PowerSchool when necessary.
Able to support and willingness to learn innovative educational technologies and problem-based learning strategies to inspire and engage students.
Actively participate in professional development opportunities to stay current in the fields of Computer Science, Engineering, Aerospace, and innovative educational practices.
Work collaboratively with industry partners to enhance and enrich student learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

Work closely with faculty and staff across the partnering school divisions.
Collaborate with industry partners to align educational programming with workforce needs and emerging technologies.
Support and mentor AAES students, fostering a culture of academic excellence, creativity, and innovation.

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and to enter data into a computer.
See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds and the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
Some teaching specialties (i.e., music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, and physical coordination and/or exertion and effort more than those listed above.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with Northampton County Public Schools supervision procedures.
