Overview
Startup Accountancy is a modern, startup-native practice built to challenge the traditional accountancy model. We’re looking for a Senior Manager to take on day-to-day leadership of client delivery, helping us scale a practice that combines technical excellence with startup speed and clarity.
You’ll manage a portfolio of clients, lead and mentor team members, and ensure our processes run smoothly. You’ll work closely with the Head of Client Services and founders, giving you direct exposure to the leadership of a fast-growing practice and a clear pathway to progress into more senior roles as we scale.
This is an opportunity to step out of the bottlenecks of traditional firms and into a role where you’ll have visibility, influence, and the ability to shape how modern accountancy is delivered.
Key Responsibilities
1. Client Delivery & Portfolio Management
- Manage a portfolio of startup clients across bookkeeping, accounts, tax, and payroll.
- Ensure deadlines and SLAs are consistently met.
- Act as the first point of escalation for client queries and complex issues.
- Help maintain Startup Accountancy’s client-first ethos: clarity, speed, and service quality.
2. Team Leadership & Coaching
- Supervise and support juniors, seniors, and assistant managers.
- Review work, provide feedback, and help develop technical and professional skills.
- Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and startup-minded problem solving.
- Deputise for the Head of Client Services when required.
3. Operations & Processes
- Work within and help improve our core systems (Karbon, Xero, Ignition, Tally).
- Ensure client workflows are efficient and well-documented.
- Suggest improvements to reduce errors, delays, and duplication.
4. Planning & Performance
- Track portfolio KPIs (quality, timeliness, efficiency).
- Report performance insights to the Head of Client Services.
- Support quarterly planning and capacity discussions.
5. Compliance & Technical Oversight
- Stay up to date on tax and compliance changes relevant to startups.
- Ensure client files are complete, accurate, and compliant.
- Share technical knowledge with the team through training and day-to-day guidance.
Requirements
- ACA or ACCA qualified, with 3–5 years’ post-qualification experience.
- Background in an accountancy practice (essential).
- Proven experience managing client portfolios and supervising junior staff.
- Strong technical knowledge across accounts, tax, and compliance.
- Tech-savvy and comfortable using cloud-based accounting tools.
- Ambitious, with an interest in stepping into leadership roles as the firm grows.
Benefits
Competitive package tailored to the right candidate’s experience and ambitions.
Clear route to Head of Client Services and potential Partner track as the firm scales.
Flexible working and the chance to help shape the culture of a fast-growth practice.
