About the role: 

Waltham Forest Public Health team is committed to building a more inclusive and equitable health system, and we are excited to offer the opportunity for a Public Health Analyst to join our passionate and diverse Public Health team. This role will focus on providing crucial data and insights needed to drive targeted improvements in population health and to tackle health inequalities effectively. 

You will work within the Public Health Intelligence team, which provides specialist information, analysis and advice about residents’ health and wellbeing needs in order to inform policy and commissioning decisions and strategy development to improve population health and reduce health inequalities. 

You will play a key part in analysing complex data sets, identifying key public health trends within these data sets. Typically structured within needs assessments, your analyses will explore a variety of geographical areas, population groups, and health and wellbeing issues, offering insights that guide our strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities: 

This key role within the team is responsible for leading and innovating the Council’s use of public health data to gain real insight that identifies challenges and opportunities, including collaborative working across the Council to contribute to the Waltham Forest Missions and tackle health inequalities across Waltham Forest. 

The role also includes partnership working with other statutory partners, healthcare providers, neighbouring boroughs and our communities, to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes for everyone, particularly those from underserved and historically marginalised communities. The postholder will support the development of public health and population health management approaches within the emerging integrated care system.  

 

Qualifications and Requirements: 

We are looking for a candidate with experience in public health analysis. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding (and experience) in using statistical and epidemiological methodologies for interpreting and understanding datasets, with a proven track record in analysing and interpreting complex public health data to provide actionable insights. We are looking for someone who will be able to manage a varied workload, responding to a wide range of public health queries in a timely and effective manner. 

You should have: 

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant subject or area 
  • Substantial experience of using statistical and epidemiological methods for analysing data sets and of working with health-related data and information systems  
  • Experience as an advanced user of MS Office productivity software, including Microsoft Excel; be an experienced user of data analysis and reporting packages such as R/R Studio, Microsoft Access and Power BI; and be an experienced user of GIS software such as MapInfo, ArcGiS, Statmap to produce maps and special analysis.  
  • Knowledge of a coding language such as R, Python or SQL and experience of using code for data analysis and/or reports 
  • The ability to learn new tools and skills quickly; and to effectively scope, plan and deliver analytical projects producing high-quality outputs. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with experience in disseminating information and complex statistical/epidemiological details through written reports and presentations to a wide range of audiences.  
  • The ability to visualise data to present the ‘story’ of data in a meaningful way, to technical and non-technical users by translating intelligence into insight
