This role provides mental health support, crisis intervention, and wellness initiatives to ensure the psychological well-being of MEDIC employees. This position delivers confidential, evidence-based counseling services and supports employees through crisis mitigation training, and psychological wellness programs. This position will work in conjunction and in support of Medic’s Peer Support Team. The Mental Health Clinician is responsible for conducting mental health assessments, developing treatment plans and connecting employees with external resources and referrals as needed.

This position collaborates with internal teams, external partners, and the Peer Support Team to foster a culture of mental health awareness and resilience across the Agency. The clinician must be able to lead in a manner that is consistent with MEDIC’s values and standards of behavior, serving as both a resource and mentor for employees in need of mental health support. A clear commitment to confidentiality, ethical practices, and continuous improvement is essential, including the ability to relate authentically, build trust, and provide guidance in high-stress environments. 

NOTE: This is a 12 month full-time contract, with potential to extend based on funding and agency needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide acute care and crisis mitigation for Medic employees.
  • Conduct mental health screenings and assessments to identify behavioral health needs including Fit for Duty evaluations
  • Develop treatment plans tailored for Medic employees.
  • Facilitate critical incident debriefs following high-stress situations with Medic’s Peer Support Team.
  • Offer referrals and access to mental health resources and providers as needed.
  • Maintain confidential and ethical practices in all counseling interactions.
  • Design and lead mental health training and support for the Peer Support Team.
  • Develop and implement psychological wellness programs to support EMS employee mental health, particularly around provider resiliency.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with first responders and leadership.
  • Track workforce behavioral health wellbeing and service usage (monitor engagement with services while maintaining confidentiality).
  • Maintain accurate documentation and patient records following professional and legal standards.
  • Support MEDIC’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives related to workforce well-being.
  • Collaborate with MEDIC leadership to develop mental health policies and programs.
  • Participate in cross-departmental meetings and projects focused on behavioral health.
  • Agency Representation - Adhere to the Medic Standards of Behavior. Adheres to Medic’s Core Values of compassion, customer advocacy, fairness, honesty, integrity, responsibility and straight forwardness.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with internal and external customers. Maintain confidentiality of information, abide by all applicable laws, comply with departmental policies and corporate compliance plans. Make recommendations for process improvement. Development and support adherence to all Agency policy and procedures.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
  • Other duties as assigned or determined.

      EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIALIZATION:

      • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field (required).
      • Minimum 2 years of experience in public health or working with first responder populations.
      • Previous experience as a clinical provider for first responders or direct work as a first responder (law enforcement, firefighter, EMS, military, etc.) is preferred.

       

      CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:

      Active licensure in North Carolina as one of the following:

      • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
      • Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC)

       

      SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Onsite position at Post 100, with some virtual and call support options. Potential need for flexible scheduling to accommodate first responder shifts.
