Join the City of Dickinson’s Special Assessment Commission

The City of Dickinson is seeking a community member to serve on the Special Assessment Commission. This important role involves ensuring fairness in how the costs of public improvements are distributed to property owners who directly benefit from the work.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • A resident of the City of Dickinson.

  • Someone with an interest in public infrastructure, city growth, and fairness in cost distribution.

  • A community-minded individual willing to carefully review and make decisions that impact property owners.

Responsibilities:
As outlined in North Dakota Century Code (NDCC 40-23-07), the Commission is responsible for:

  • Determining which lots and parcels of land are especially benefited by a public improvement project.

  • Determining the amount each property is benefited and assigning a fair portion of the total project cost.

  • Ensuring no property is assessed more than the benefit it receives.

  • Reviewing and approving special assessments, including expenses incurred in making the assessment.

Commitment & Compensation:

  • Members are appointed to staggered three-year terms.

    • One member serves until the first April meeting of the governing body in the first odd-numbered year following appointment.

    • One member serves until the first April meeting of the governing body in the second odd-numbered year following appointment.

    • One member serves until the first April meeting of the governing body in the third odd-numbered year following appointment.

  • Meetings are held as needed.

  • Members receive a stipend per meeting attended.
