About the Department

Purpose of Job
Performs routine, semi-skilled work in the cleaning, maintenance, groundskeeping, and front desk operations of The Center.
Essential Job Duties

  1. Maintain the grounds of The Center including grass and landscaping maintenance as well as litter pickup. 
  2. Maintain the floors of The Center facility by dusting, sweeping, mopping, or buffing as needed or as assigned. 
  3. Clean and supply restrooms as needed or as assigned. 
  4. Clean windows and stairwells.
  5. Gather, collect, and dispose of all refuse. 
  6. Prepare and setup for special events including banquets, public meetings, tournaments, and fundraisers as well as work special events during and after normal business hours.  
  7. Provide customer service at front desk during assigned hours which may include greeting guests in-person or via telephone as well as providing information or assisting with enrollment in programs or leagues.
  8. Collect and receipt of daily user fees and provide accurate change.  
Other Job Duties
  1. Replace light bulbs and perform minor maintenance tasks.
  2. Load and unload cleaning equipment and materials.
  3. Performs other related work as required.
Primary Job Challenges
  1. Maintaining a positive customer service attitude when dealing with dissatisfied or unhappy citizens and customers.
  2. Staying up to date with programs, policies, training, and current technology that are job-related.
  3. Exposure to fumes, chemicals, and other noxious odors or toxic substances including but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting chemicals. 
Equipment Operated
  1. Job-related equipment and tools including, but not limited to, mop, mop bucket, broom, vacuum, and floor buffer.
  2. Personal computer and/or tablet with applicable software; other standard office equipment including copier, printer, etc.
  3. Automobile and/or truck with two-way radio.
  4. Variety of light equipment including, but not limited to, mowers and weed eaters.
Key Competencies Required
  1. Knowledge of city personnel rules and regulations and departmental policies. 
  2. Knowledge of the maintenance and manual tasks involved in cleaning and groundskeeping.
  3. Knowledge of the safe use, operation, and maintenance of the tools and equipment used in cleaning and grounds maintenance.
  4. Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving regulations.
  5. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time at a steady pace, including under unfavorable weather conditions.
  6. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  7. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  1. Employee will work primarily indoors and will walk, stand, stoop, carry, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
  2. Employee may occasionally be exposed to extreme temperatures, intense noise, and equipment.
  3. Periodic overtime schedule will apply. 
Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or G.E.D. with some experience in maintenance and groundskeeping work, as well as some computer skills, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.
Required Certifications/Licenses:   Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
