Summary
Under supervision, the Counselor provides guidance for the spiritual and social needs of the inmate population through and for the Hays County Jail. The work involves addressing a variety of problems and situations. This position affects the immediate staff and inmates of the Sheriff’s Office and requires the timely provision of services to others. They must understand the behavior and ethics expected of a Counselor. The Counselor must have a deep personal commitment to their calling, enjoy working with people and takes a supportive and tactful approach to people’s situations.

Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.


Position Duties

  • Responds directly to inmate requests for assistance using in-house or referral sources.
  • Coordinates volunteer schedules and ensure Correction Officers are aware of daily programs.
  • Provides necessary support and supplies for volunteers.
  • In the absence of the Inmate Programs Manager, provides assessments for 17-year-old inmates.
  • Receives referrals from Corrections Officers who believe an inmate needs intervention.
  • Serves as liaison with other professional criminal justice employees, medical and social workers.
  • Counsels' individuals, in the absence of the Chaplain, through times of crisis due to death, illness, relationship breakdown, and other incidences.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to inmates with struggles such as drug/alcohol abuse, family violence, parenting, and other issues and situations.
  • Provides spiritual intervention for inmates seeking spiritual guidance.
  • Assists the Chaplain in planning ceremonies or services such as baptisms and the sacrament of communion.
  • Assists in providing other services that are allowed by the administration.
  • Immediately reports any circumstance that jeopardizes the safety and security of the facility to immediate supervisor or corrections staff.
  • Keeps records of requests for religious materials, baptisms, and other services as required by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Renders credible testimony in court proceedings, including Justice Courts, County Courts, District Courts, and any U.S. Federal Court.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience providing counseling and spiritual guidance to others.

Other Qualifications

  • Class C TX driver’s license.
