The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Animal Care Attendant(Animal Care Attendant I/IIgrade G13-G14 position, in the Animal Services Division.


About the Position

This is an entry-level animal attendant position that maintains and thoroughly cleans kennels, cages, and other common areas at the animal services facility using approved procedures and techniques, which would working include but are not limited to:  removing waste, power washing kennels, mopping/scrubbing and disinfecting areas where animals are kept, fed, watered and generally cared for.  Prepares food, feeds, provides water, and sanitizes litter boxes and feeding equipment.  Gathers and launders soiled pet bedding and replace it with clean pet bedding.  This position is considered essential personnel in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Position Duties

  • House animals safely and humanely in order to protect the animals, self, and others.  

  • Examine animals to determine their sex, species, size, and age. 

  • Monitor animals for signs of illness, injuries, and unusual physical and behavioral conditions.

  • Isolate animals as necessary. 

  • Perform initial health assessments of animals arriving at the facility and administers routine vaccinations.  

  • Assist veterinarians with wellness checks on animals.  

  • Socialize and exercises shelter animals on a daily basis.

  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • A valid Maryland State driver's license is required upon appointment in order to perform job related duties and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Animal Care Attendant experience

  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
