About the Department
Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to patch install, configure and upgrade workstations, servers and related hardware and software in a LAN, WAN and stand-alone environment.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Provides technical support and deployment of software on clients throughout the Metro enterprise
- Uses enterprise patching platforms to deploy patches and software to identified assets on a regular interval, as well as applying out of band critical patches
- Performs testing on patches released for operating systems and third-party applications to verify their impact on the environment
- Develops and maintains patching scheduled and obtains necessary approvals prior to implementation
- Develops and maintains a representative test group of computers matching special configuration OS (operating system) versions, special use OS versions, and standard OS versions to minimize operation impact of patches
- Prepares, tests, and deploys operating systems upgrades
- Creates batch files, collections, and queries
- Coordinates with agency technical liaisons to establish maintenance windows
- Researches and analyzes the latest vulnerabilities using risk-based analysis, vulnerability management tools, vendor information, and Metro’s risk tolerance to determine priorities in patching
- Research operational impact of patches prior to production deployment using open source and vendor notifications
- Works in conjunction with the Asset Management team to enable stable and consistent OS deployment
- Handles escalated trouble tickets related to troubleshooting patches and their impacts and endpoints
- Works alternating schedules to accommodate established patching windows as needed
- Performs related work as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Four (4) years’ experience in server, internet, systems engineer or systems administration in a client/server environment or a professional certification or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have upon hire, or obtain within six months of hire, one of the following professional certifications: Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager certification, ManageEngine Desktop Central Certification CompTIA Security+, or SolarWinds Patch Manager Academy course
- Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check
- Must complete the annual security awareness training
- Must be on 24-hour call
- Must provide one'’s own source of transportation
- Must work a varied schedule
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations
