About the Department
Grays Harbor College is accepting applications for two TRIO Upward Bound Saturday Academy Specialists. This position is a part-time and temporary role dedicated to supporting college-bound high school students from Raymond, Ocosta, and Hoquiam. This position involves providing safe and reliable transportation to and from Grays Harbor College (GHC) on designated Saturdays. Staff will facilitate structured academic preparation through tutoring in core subjects, assist with college readiness activities, and offer social-emotional learning (SEL) support to foster student growth and resilience. Ideal candidates are passionate about education, skilled in mentoring youth, and committed to creating a positive learning environment.
Work Location and Schedule Details
This position is located at GHC’s main campus and will occur on two Saturdays a month from 8:00am-3:30pm.
Note: We require at least 5 students to sign up in order to keep Saturday Academy scheduled. Students sign up ahead of time so we can create transportation routes.
Position Duties
- Provide safe and timely transportation for Upward Bound students from Raymond, Ocosta, and Hoquiam to Grays Harbor College on designated Saturdays.
- Deliver academic tutoring in core high school subjects to support student success and college readiness.
- Facilitate structured academic prep sessions, including study skills, test-taking strategies, and enrichment activities.
- Support students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) through mentoring, group discussions, and guided exercises.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, and progress.
- Create a welcoming and respectful learning environment for all students.
- Collaborate with Upward Bound staff to implement Saturday Academy curriculum and programming.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and program staff regarding schedules, expectations, and student needs.
- Assist with classroom setup, materials distribution, and cleanup as needed.
- Uphold TRIO program values and adhere to all safety, confidentiality, and program policies.
Minimum Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and abilities required. - Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, or currently enrolled in a relevant degree program.
- Experience in teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or working with high school students in academic settings.
- Comfortable providing both one-on-one and group tutoring across core academic subjects.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with high school student populations.
- Familiarity with social-emotional learning (SEL) concepts and youth development practices.
- Ability to manage small groups and facilitate structured learning activities.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a 12-passenger van
