Mess Attendant Supervisor - Naval Medical Center Portsmouth - Enjoy a rewarding and challenging position with a nonprofit organization that has been helping educate, train, and provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities since 1955. We are currently seeking applicants for a full-time Mess Attendant Supervisor who functions as a first-line supervisor responsible for supervising the performance of all required mess attendant functional duties assigned by the Project Manager, Food Services-Naval Station Galley. Must be present during all hours while contract employees are working. Work schedules may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and periods of inclement weather.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities represent the essential functions of this job that an individual must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Manage and oversee every aspect of food service operations during the assigned shift
- Ensure compliance with Contract requirements, including developing and maintaining a suitable quality control program that assures compliance with all Health Department codes and regulations; managing inventory; ensuring the cleanliness of the kitchen, equipment, and dining area; and overseeing proper storage of items
- Routinely inspect machinery and other property to ensure a safe working environment
- Develop and implement individualized training plans and complete documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements
- Provide daily instruction and supervision to assigned personnel, which includes training employees; documenting daily attendance and hours worked; reviewing, editing, and approving time sheets; monitoring performance, task allocation, and conducting performance evaluations; problem resolution, and recommendations for hiring and firing
- Provide excellent customer service by seeking feedback on customer satisfaction
- Address and resolve customer complaints promptly and professionally
- Attend meetings and training activities as required
- Performs other such duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, & EXPERIENCE:
The following qualifications represent the training, education, certifications, licensures, and/or work experience required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities successfully:
Related job experience providing food services.
- At least three years of recent working experience (within the last five years) in Government/commercial galley/kitchen and dining room facilities with equipment and operational equivalent to that involved in the performance of this contract
- Minimum of one year of recent work experience (within the last three years) must have been as a supervisor in such operation or as a combination of mess attendant lead worker in all the different functional areas, plus specialized supervisory training which equated to such supervisory experience
- Ability to perform a dual role as a mess attendant in emergencies
- Experience training and working with people with disabilities
- Clearance through a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening is required
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Performing the duties of this job requires near visual acuity, the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds, and gross manipulation. Additionally, the employee:
- Must be free of tuberculosis in a communicable form
- Must be able to exert considerable effort, frequently lifting to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, and squatting
- Must be able to stand for four or more hours
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be primarily working indoors in a commercial kitchen with potential exposure to hazards typical to this environment. The noise level in the work environment is high with frequent interruptions.
