Location: This is a remote position open to candidates based in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Burlington, VT; or Tallahassee, FL.
Reports to: VP, Application Engineering
Salary range: $150,000 - $170,000

What You’ll Do
As the Principal Data Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain systems that ingest, organize, steward, distribute, and secure both internal and third-party product data. Your work will directly impact core products and initiatives, enabling teams to deliver high-quality solutions while maintaining performance, reliability, and compliance standards.
You’ll own database architecture, operational support, and platform modernization, working closely with engineering, product, and infrastructure teams. Together, you’ll tackle complex data challenges, implement solutions, and drive continuous improvements.
This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic influence. You’ll guide architecture decisions, lead critical projects, and shape the future of Aptarro’s data platforms.
In this role, you will:
- Own the architecture and operational support of a large, complex centralized content data platform while supporting database needs for core Aptarro products
- Collaborate with Agile software development teams on database refactoring, coding, and performance optimization
- Proactively identify system improvements, streamline processes, and implement solutions end-to-end
- Partner with application engineering, product management, architecture, and infrastructure teams to drive enhancements and solutions for the data platform
- Monitor database performance and failure scenarios, implementing automated alerting and monitoring improvements
- Serve as the primary on-call resource for database incidents, leading restoration, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
- Collaborate with application teams to simplify, modernize, and integrate database architecture
- Analyze workloads and onboarding plans to anticipate performance and capacity requirements
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, IT, Computer Science, or a related field
- 10+ years of SQL Server database development and administration experience, including performance tuning, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery
- Extensive experience integrating third-party healthcare content datasets and architecting rules-based data processing engines
- Proven ability to design and implement comprehensive data ingestion, stewardship, and distribution platforms
- Hands-on expertise with SQL Server technologies, including AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Replication Services, Integration Services, Transparent Data Encryption, and workflow automation
- Familiarity with Azure database technologies, such as Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Strong problem-solving skills with a track record of resolving complex database issues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to document processes and train cross-functional teams
- Experience mentoring or leading other engineers is a plus
